FIRST FRENCH EDITION OF THE MOST IMPORTANT MAP IN AMERICA'S HISTORY

Nota. Francreich besitizet was grun und blau ist Egland [sic] hat das Gelbe und Will das grune darzuhaben. LE ROUGE. PARIS. 1756. OUTLINE HAND COLOR. COPPER ENGRAVING.  Early French edition of the famous Mitchell map, the map used for international treaties up into the 20th century. Eight sheets in wall map format on rods with turned ends. Of especial interest in this French version is the coloring instructions found in the German portion of the title. It states, in rather incorrect German, that France possessed the green and blue areas, England held the yellow and would also claim the green. Since Frenchman didn't know or agree with the boundaries of the areas in dispute, couldn't read German or wouldn't, few copies of the French version are found correctly colored. Superb modern restoration and coloring, which was taken from a sample in the Library of Congress. Of Mitchell's original map there are 21 editions and versions, in four languages. John Mitchell was born in Virginia and educated as a physician at Edinburgh. While practicing medicine in Virginia he also made advances in biology and chemistry and corresponded with Linnaeus describing plants not known to him. In 1746 the Earl of Halifax commissioned him to return to England and prepare a map stating the British claims in North America. A partisan effort in rebuttal of previous French maps, it is the only map Mitchell is known to have drawn. A diplomat's map, the third English version was used in 1783 at the Peace of Paris negotiations to establish the boundaries of the United States as an independent nation. Many historians have claimed it to be the most important map in American history. 52"H. x 75.5"W. VERY GOOD. Price on request.  I.D.#26403.
