Notes Of A Military Reconnoissance From Fort Leavenworth In Missouri To San Diego, In California Including Part Of The Arkansas, Del Norte, And Gila Rivers. By Lieut. Col. W.H. Emory. Made In 1846-7, With The Advanced Guard Of The "Army Of The West." ... Wendell and Van Benthuysen. Washington. 1848. 8vo, 614 p. 2 fold. maps, 63 litho. plates. Original brown ribbed cloth, printed spine label (Thirtieth Congress-First session. [House.] Ex.Doc. No.41.) First printing, the House issue being earlier than the Senate. Lacks the large folding general map that was not available upon first publication. Joints worn, spine loosened, top of spine gone, internal foxing but plates generally good. Two leaves in Johnston’s report misprinted so that pp. 567-8 are clipped at the fore edge with slight loss of text and pp. 609-10 printed crooked. An important source book for the early Southwest and adding California to the Union. Captain Abraham Robinson Johnston was killed in action at San Pasqual in the early morning of Dec. 6, 1946 during the brief Bear Flag War. His posthumous notes, included by Brig. Gen.S.W. Kearny, gives a good account of the fighting and careful notes and drawings on the local Indians. In addition to Emory’s and the Johnston diary are reports of Lt. J.W. Abert and Lieut. Col. P. St. George Cooke. Samorano 80, #33; Howes E-145; Cowan p. 195.  I.D.#07387.

Rare state of the title in abbreviated form, not noted in Howes.  I.D.#00759.
