Brown pictorial cloth, in gilt and colors, depicting the gold
sword presented Fremont by a foreign government and the Order of
the Pour L’Merite awarded by the King of Prussia; a decoration
rarely given foreigners. Only Volume I was ever published. This
binding is extremely lavish, but Vol. II was never completed. Many
of the plates are below standard. Very celebrated during his life,
Fremont’s fame was waning when compared with Grant or Custer and
subscriptions were insufficient to permit more. Bookseller’s
ticket from Deadwood, Dakota Territory. Slight shelf wear and a
bit shaken but a superior copy of a book rarely found this nice. I.D.#07997. SOLD. |
