Birkbeck, Morris. Letters From Illinois, Illustrated By A Map Of The United States, Shewing Mr. Birkbeck’s Journey From Norfolk To Illinois And A Map Of English Prairie And The Adjacent Country, By John Melish... M. Carey. Philadelphia. 1818. 12mo, 154 p. incl. initial ad. leaves of Carey’s "The Olive Branch". Rebound in black cloth, entirely uncut, with original front wrapper laid down. First editon. Howes B467; Sabin 5567. Map in fine state, slight foxing. A leading Quaker and agricultural innovator, Birkbeck is best known for his travel books. Early and important Illinois material.  I.D.#00031.

Original albumin photograph showing the building, neighboring buildings and the Chicago River, including the lakefront warehouses of Sturges Buckingham & Co. 7.5 x 16 in. Matted, with calligraphic title beneath. Few small inked notations on surface. Lower left corner gone. Professionally repaired.  I.D.#07907. SOLD.

J. F. Martin. Martin’s World’s Fair Album-Atlas And Family Souvenir. C. Ropp & Sons. Chicago. 1892. Oblong 4to. unpaged (288 p.) many illus. Brown cloth, gilt. Some rubbing and lightly stained. A pre-fair view book showing the proposed fair buildings and pre-opening civic events. Of greater importance for its views of Chicago. The rich and powerful of the city preferred castles then and the architectural imagination for which the city is so noted had not yet come into full flower. Has a section of small colored maps of the states and Canadian dominions at the back. Dybwad & Bliss 1630 cites four variants of this volume but not this one in brown cloth.
