"Map of the Indian tribes of North American about 1600 A.D. along
the Atlantic; & about 1800 A.D. westwardly. Published by the Amer:
Antq: Soc: From a drawing by Hon: A. Gallatin. Pendelton’s
Lithography." [16.25 x 15"]. Hand colored map of major Native
American nations also displays the routes of Jedidiah Strong Smith
(on map called J.B. Smith), from Great Salt Lake to San Francisco
in 1827 and another trek in southern California the previous year.
This ‘synopsis’ is really a study into the linguistics and roots
of speech of native North Americans commenced at the suggestion of
Baron von Humboldt and augmented by interviews with members of the
delegations of southern Indians who visited Washington in 1825-6.
Gallatin is best known for writings on politics and monetary
policy; this study which took on a hobby aspect, is a dedicated
pioneer effort to understand and communicate with Indians and to
build dictionaries of their tongues. I.D.#08977.
