REMARKABLE RECORD OF EARLY
AMERICAN RAILROAD CONSTRUCTION
Philadelphia and Reading Rail
Road. Topographical Plan & Profile Of The Philadelphia And
Reading Rail Road. R.B. Osborne, del. J. Knight, sc. Printed
by G.F. Lewis. Scale ca. 1:207,500. 32 x 9.75 inches.
Philadelphia. 1838? Special edition of Modelski (1975) 527. Struck
on plate stock with the Schuylkill River and the route hand
colored, showing the right of way from Mahanoy Mountain along the
Schuykill River east through Pottsville, Reading to Philadelphia.
Copper engraving on fine plate paper, the profile along the bottom
margin having numerous additional readings inserted with care in
manuscript. Sharply engraved in minute detail. Together with 23
(of 25?) gray and white mezzotint and inked detail manuscript
plates of similar dimensions giving elevations of the major
viaducts, tunnel, culverts, depots and workshops at Reading, major
bridges, a water station, switches, spikes, clamps and cleats,
round house turn table, sustaining walls and drains, and the
arrangement of tracks at stations. Remarkably artistic engineering
drawings highlighted in color. Map and each plate encapsulated on
to acid free foam board and shrinkwrapped and fitted into a black
cloth folding boxcase with wrappers with label on lid, flaps
attached and with velcro closures. One corner of one plate
missing, not affecting drawing, small holes and margin chips on
others. Old pencil library numbers probably from the Pennsylvania
Railroad Library. As can be seen from the drawings, the
Philadelphia and Reading Railroad right of way was constructed
with great care. Piers and abutments were of the finest cut
granite and building chimneys and arches were of fine brickwork.
Work began in 1833 and was completed in 1839. The entire line was
opened on July 13, 1842. Those other railroads built with haste
had to be redone later and had tracks and roadbeds too weak to
support the weight of newer locomotives. Work on this served as
the pattern for railroad construction in its ideal form. In a
report submitted to Congress by the General of the Army in 1883,
Col. Orlando Metcalfe Poe provided a brief history of the origins
of railroad construction in America. In it, Col. Poe informed, in
1830 there existed only 23 miles of finished railroad in operation
in America. By 1836 a total of only 1,273 miles of operating track
had been constructed in the United States. The Philadelphia &
Reading was in point of time the earliest really long distance
railroad to be acutally finished and put in service in this
country. Surveys done for insurance purposes exist for other
railroads but usually date from the 1870’s. Ernest Hexamer and Son
in Philadelphia did many between 1872 and 1914. A group this
comprehensive so early in time is an unusual survival. A museum
exhibit. I.D.#07981.

short distance above Phoenixville, which is over 2000 feet in
length. It is cut through a solid dark-red sandstone rock, and is
probably one of the heaviest sections of railroading ever executed
in the United States, as, in fact, the entire road may be regarded
as one of the most extraordinary, in many respects, in the world."
