BASIC TEXAS BOOKS 151 -
WITH RARE MAP
Newell, Chester.
History Of The Revolution In Texas, Particularly Of The War Of
1835 & '36; Together With The Latest Geographical, Topographical,
And Statistical Accounts Of The Country, From The Most Authentic
Sources. Also, An Appendix. By The Rev. C. Newell. Wiley & Putnam.
New-York. 1838. 12mo, x,[ii],215 p. Fold. india paper map. Modern
library cloth, title mutilated and repaired. A good hand
bookbinder could do wonders with this copy. First edition. Second
issue with page iv blank and the dedication on page [iii]. The map
is titled, "Texas, 1838." Rev. Chester Newell (1803-1892) spent
1837 in Texas for reasons of health and wrote as a result, one of
the earliest books published about Texas after it became a
republic. His quotations taken from famous participants in the war
for independence, he names Houston, Lamar, F. Huston, Poe, Ward,
Neil and Shackleford, are accurate and historically significant.
His account is pro-Texas but more objective than many other
American books of the period. Sections consider the history of the
region while part of Mexico, the war, its geography, topography,
statistics, soil and climate. Basic Texas Books 151. The late John
H. Jenkins liked the work very much for in it is found his
favorite quotation about the character of Texans in the early
days. "There is existing in the minds of the people in many
places, if not generally, at the North, a strong and bitter
prejudise [sic] against Texas. ... Because it has been represented
to be the resort of criminals, of insolvent and fraudulent
debtors, of outlaws, and bad characters of every description. ...
No, it is believed only that a large part of the people of Texas
are of the character described. Well, admitting they are, should
the entire population and country be then reviled?"
