Philip & Son. Philips'
Thirty Inch Globe. Philip & Son (retailed in U.S. by Rand,
McNally & Co.) London. circa 1928. Originally in the offices of
a noted executive, this splendid globe now resides in a home
near Washington, D.C. The 30 inch diameter orb rests within a
massive walnut floor stand with ornately carved central support
stretchers and raised on four Corinthian column legs with bun
feet. The solid brass meridian is graduated in incised degrees.
The wide walnut horizon ring was finished without a paper scale.
The entire ensemble is completely original without any
restoration or replaced hardware. Overall height is 43.5 inches.
The orb is 30 inches plus meridian, and other than minor loss of
outer surface shellac is in excellent condition. The surface
political geography shows Leningrad in Russia and no Japanese
incursions in Asia which would indicate a date between 1925 and
1930. The oceans are finished in a pale green and the land
surfaces in an orange-umber. There is a metal time dial at the
north pole. Nautical distances are shown as well as a Table of
Equation with other usual findings. With its impressive size and
classical stand this globe is ideal for an executive office,
boardroom, or fine home library. So far that has been its usage.
