SCARCE LARGE HYBRID SCHOOL GLOBE/AIR SPEEDS FOR JET & PROPELLER AIRCRAFT

Johnston, W. & A. J. and A. J. Nystrom & Co. 16 inch Simplified Physical-Political globe by W. & A.K. Johnston, Limited. Geographers, engravers, printers Edinburgh, Scotland. A.J. Nystrom & Co. sole United States agents. Chicago. Edited by A.E. Parkins Scale 1:31,680,000. 1 inch on the globe represents 500 miles on the earth... Printed by W. & A.K. Johnston Ltd. Edinburgh, Scotland Copyright. W. & A.K. Johnston/A.J. Nystrom. Chicago. c1926. Dull paper gores over hollow steel orb. Without time dial. Oceans finished in avocado green with International Date Line, north and south tropic "sun lines", ocean currents, and ocean deeps. Laid into round steel cradle, felted, with horizon ring raised on six conforming steel ferules. Unusual in that the orb is by Johnston with the cradle by George F. Cram Co. Air speed distances shown for both propeller and jet aircraft. Pakistan and Israel are shown and with Indo-China no longer French. One surface dent. I.D.#08098.

LARGE, LECTURE PLATFORM FLOOR GLOBE

Denoyer-Geppert Co. Cartocraft Physical-Political 16 inch globe... Edited by L.P. Denoyer... Denoyer-Geppert Co. Chicago. c1929. Dull paper gores over plasterboard, later time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in pea green with International Date Line, Ecliptic, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and large analemma. Cast bronze full ring meridian in moveable cradle mounted to adjustable lecture platform floor stand. Good physical globe without national boundaries but showing major cities. Heights of some mountains given and many oceanic "deeps". Orb damaged with crack in south Atlantic and surface loss in central Africa. Cradle handcrafted and rewelded. A good geographer's globe. Oceans finished in avocado green, with International Date Line and ocean currents. Full cast metal meridian ring in cradle on adjustable column and white enameled tripod base. Lecture platform globe that emphasizes the physical features of the earth, omitting political boundaries. Port Arthur called Dairen, Seoul called Keijo. Shows deep spots in oceans, plateaus, plains, etc. One surface dent, stand needs attention. Interesting adult geographer's globe. I.D.#07339.

Interesting adult geographer's globe that emphasizes the physical features of the earth. Shows deep spots in oceans, plateaus, plains, etc. Political boundaries added afterward in red. Port Arthur called Dairen, Seoul called Keijo, capital of Gorno-Altai Republic today called Stalinsk. One surface dent, some surface rubbing. Restorations. ELEGANT HAMMOND 16 INCH FLOOR GLOBE

Hammond, C. S. & Co. Hammond's 16 inch Physical globe... C.S. Hammond & Co. Brooklyn, N.Y. 1932. Coated paper gores over pasteboard, large three-spoke brass time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in avocado green showing a number of physical and political features unusual on globes. International Date Line, Ecliptic, nautical distances and analemma. Good depiction of the earth's physical features with varying shades of color, North American and Asian railroads and ocean depths. Elegantly mounted on a cast iron full ring meridian and cradle atop a fine mahogany Duncan Phyfe style tripod stand with brass paw sabots. Surface cleaned and recolored in spots. A beautiful fine residence library globe with a very legible surface. Shows British Mandate in Palestine. Designation "Manchukuo" superimposed on Manchuria. I.D.#08061.

A VASTLY SUPERIOR WORLD

16 inch Library globe. Replogle Globes, Inc. Chicago. c1935. Gloss paper gores over aluminum, time dial at North Pole. Time dial fixed to central shaft released by a wingnut for precise readings. Oceans finished in turquoise green with nautical distances and analemma with note on its purpose. Nickel plated cast pot metal full ring meridian within cradle fastened with wingnut. Orb and cradle fixed to an elegant high quality walnut Duncan Phyfe style floor stand with baluster column with palm leaf motif, four incurvate fluted legs ending with brass paw-like sabots. A very good quality well constructed piece of furniture. Bright, extremely legible map surfaces. Nautical routes shown with tiny steamships. Shows the Saar in Europe. Ethiopia shown as Italian. The Library series, on either floor or table mounts, is the best Replogle globe of the period. I.D.#07321. SOLD.

Oceans finished in blue green, time dial at North Pole. Orb shows Arctic Circle, International Date Line, tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, nautical distances and analemma. Arctic Circle, International Date Line, nautical routes and distances, land caravan routes and railroads all shown in red. Shows Manchukuo and Korea is Chosen. Ethiopia as Italian, British Mandate in Palestine. Black finish iron lecture platform mount with full ring meridian in cradle raised on adjustable pipe floor stand on heavy round cast iron base. Patented Rand McNally mount. Good overall condition, some rubbing around Antarctica. Handsome appearance. I.D.#09048.

RARE EARLY 16 INCH REPLOGLE BECKLEY-CARDY

Replogle Globes. 16 inch Universal globe. Beckley-Cardy Company Chicago. Legend... Made in U.S.A. Copyright Replogle Globes, Inc. Replogle Globes. Chicago. c1936. Uncoated gores over plaster, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in pea green with ecliptic, International Date Line, nautical distances with tiny steamships, short wave stations and analemma scale. The same surface as the Replogle Library floor models. Retailed by school map dealers Beckley-Cardy, renamed the Universal and supplied with their label. Cast metal full ring meridian in cradle. Mounted on a period mahogany stained Duncan Phyffe style four-foot floor stand. Shows the Saar region in Europe which voted in 1936 to return to Germany, Ethiopia designated Italian and Manchukuo shown in Asia. Surface faded and rubbed but very legible and nicely toned. Overall height 46.5 inches. Only example we have seen. I.D.#09908. SOLD.

Coated paper gores over particleboard. No time dial. Oceans finished in pea green with numerous topographical and geophysical features. Nautical distances, ocean currents, relative sizes of centers of population emphasized. Fully mounted in a mahogany cradle table stand with time and latitude scale on horizon ring. Bold band for equator, tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and Equinoctial Colure. A good library table globe just prior to World War 2. Earlier edition than I.D.#07544. Shows Europe before nazi expansion, Italian East Africa and Manchukuo. I.D.#07554.

Cram, George F. Co. Cram's 16 inch Political Terrestrial globe. (Since 1867) - Scale approx. 500 miles per inch - Dull coated paper gores over plaster, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in dark olive green with eliptic, equinoctial colure, red nautical distances, prominent ocean currents and analemma. Offset bronze bracket on an inverted bell form wood column and turned walnut base. Map surfaces show the immediate pre World War 2 geography with Austria and Czechoslovakia absorbed into the Third Reich. Indo China still shown as French. Luxury home table globe from the Roosevelt era. The George F. Cram Co. Indianapolis. 1938, early. I.D.#08291b. SOLD.

Replogle Globes. 16 inch Library globe. Legend... Replogle Globes. Chicago. 1939. Dull paper gores over glass orb, lighted from within. Time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in apple green with extensive and very legible surface. Includes International Date Line, Ecliptic, ocean currents, nautical distances, heights of many mountains, analemma scale. Cast white metal full ring meridian in similar cradle with thumbscrew adjusters raised on a carved mahogany table stand with three carved animal feet. Europe shows Danzig and Bohemia and Moravia as part of the Third Reich, all of Austria annexed. Slovenia a Nazi satellite. Indo-China not shown as French due to Japanese invasion. LARGEST TERRESTRIAL ART GLOBE ON FULL MOUNT FLOOR STAND

Rand, McNally & Co. Rand McNally Indexed Terrestrial Art globe. Diameter 16 inches. Distances in statute miles. One inch equals 500 miles. See Great circle measuring scale along 30 w. Longitude. Rand McNally & Co. Chicago. c1940. Dull paper gores over hollow steel orb, plastic time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in pea green with International Date Line, nautical distances and small representations of famous sailing ships. On this, the largest size of the Art Globe, the little sailing ships are actually named. Cast white metal full ring meridian on a fullmount walnut Duncan Phyfe three leg stand. Names each small atoll in the South Pacific. Slovakia shown as a German Protectorate. Surface corrosion. Lower grommet damaged with considerable rubbing in lower hemisphere. Early wartime top end model with the orb a bit too heavy for the mounting. Rare size. I.D.#08179.

Rand McNally & Company. Chicago. c1946. Dull paper gores over hollow steel orb, no time dial. Oceans finished in pea green with analemma scale. Full cast iron ring meridian fastened by adjustment screws to a cradle of cast iron marked Patent No. 8,2014290-2028262 Rand McNally & Co. Chicago, Ill. Raised on an adjustable telescoping heavy cast iron floor stand with round base 18 inches in diameter likewise marked Rand, McNally & Co. Pat. App'd for. Surface shows East and West Pakistan, Indo-China not French, independent Ethiopia and Somaliland in Africa. Relatively simple map surfaces for so large a globe. Two small surface dents, other stains and abrasions. A lecture platform globe from the Truman era. Unusual. I.D.#04210.

 

 

SUPERB EXAMPLE OF CRAM'S FINE LARGE LIBRARY GLOBE

Cram, George F. Co. Cram's 16 inch Political Terrestrial globe. (Since 1867) - Scale approx. 500 miles per inch - The George F. Cram Co. Indianapolis. c1948. Dull coated paper gores over plaster, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in medium blue green with elliptic, equinoctial colure, nautical distances and analemma. Cast gilded iron full ring meridian in cradle on an inverted bell form wood column and turned walnut base. Map surfaces show the immediate post World War 2 geography with changes for Pakistan (1947) and Israel (1948) overprinted. Indo China still shown as French. Small surface crack in the region of western Canada but overall above average. Luxury home table globe from the Truman era. I.D.#06957. SOLD.

ELEGANTLY MOUNTED PROJECT GLOBE

Rand McNally Project globe. One inch equals 500 miles. Diameter 16 inches. Rand McNally & Company. Chicago. 1949. 16 inch metal orb dressed with white plastic, coated markable paper gores, plastic time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in pale green with no lettering, showing only topography, national boundaries and the International Date Line. Finely mounted with a cast chromed full ring meridian in a cradle with screw adjustment on a modernistic style silvered heavy cast iron table base with incised stylized conch shell swirls and six short supporting legs. Cradle is marked Rand McNally Patent No. 3.2014290-2029252. Shows Pakistan but Korea and Indochina still undivided. Some surface checking and abrasions. Unusually fine mount for a schoolroom globe. I.D.#06293.

Without surface time dial. Oceans finished pea green, with numerous topographical and geophysical features. Nautical distances, ocean currents, topographic heights and depths. Full mount blonde wood cradle table stand, time dial and latitude scale on horizon ring. Some surface wear and cracks. Pakistan is present but French Indochina and Korea still united. A good school library table globe intended to match the furniture and decor of the time. I.D.#07544.

Chicago. 1949. 16 inch metal orb dressed with white plastic, coated markable paper gores, relief painted green to dark brown, plastic time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in blue, showing topography, national boundaries and the International Date Line, analemma with note of explanation. Finely mounted with a heavy cast iron full ring meridian in a cradle with screw adjustment on a modernistic style bronze-brown (anodized?) heavy cast iron table base with incised stylized conch shell swirls and six short supporting legs. Versailles borders in Europe, Manchuria as yet not annexed by the Japanese, Adm. Byrd explorations in Antarctica. Some surface checking and abrasions. Handsome large well made globe. I.D.#09028.

ATTRACTIVE LIGHTED 'LIBRARY' ON FLOOR STAND

Metal time dial  at North Pole. Oceans finished in antique tan when lighted but green blue when not. Lights from within. Full ring meridian in bronze that rests on metal roller built into the four legged mahogany finished floor stand moderne in style. Shows Israel but with Korea undivided. Slight surface nick in South America but in very good condition overall.  Handsome larger lighted globe.  I.D.#10106. 

 

Weber Costello Co. 16 Inch Beginner's Weber Costello Educator Beginner's globe. Edith P. Parker, editor. Legend... Model 366 AH-18. Benefic Press. Chicago. c1950. Coated paper gores over pasteboard, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in jade green with no analemma. Goldtoned strap steel ferule mount without meridian on a round conical base. Very simplified maps with few place names. Both Korea and Vietnam not named but Alaska and Hawaii are both designated U.S. states. Schoolroom globe in extremely fine condition. I.D.#04323.

 

SCARCE MODERN CELESTIAL GLOBE

Cram, George F. Co. Cram's 16 inch Celestial globe... The George F. Cram Co., Inc. Indianapolis. c1950. Coated paper gores over plastic, time dial at North Pole. Heavens finished in medium blue with celestial equator, ecliptic, autumnal and vernal equinoctial colures, summer and winter solstitial colules. Dates of the year showing that visible at any given time. Names the zodiac configurations but does not show them. Popular configurations such as "big dipper," "the sickle," etc. shown by yellow lines. With full ring goldtoned cast meridian laid into a bent wire cradle that supports an horizon ring with printed table of time, degrees, zodiac signs, compass headings and months. Fine condition. Among the last celestial globes as known for centuries for NASA and the Hubbell telescope provide a more realistic view of the universe today. I.D.#09044.

Cram, George F. Co. Cram's Project globe. 16 inch Scale 500 miles to the inch... The George F. Cram Co., Inc. Indianapolis. c1950. Coated washable paper gores over plastic. No time dial. Oceans finished in medium blue with ocean currents shown and named. Present but not named are equator, ecliptic, tropics of cancer and capricorn, analemma. Latitude figures shown and date the sun crosses equator. Set on a crackle finish steel Douthit-style cradle base. No topographic or political features. Fine condition. I.D.#09045.

INTERESTING AND INGENIOUS CUSTOM TABLE MOUNT

Designed and edited by Gustav Brueckmann, cartographer.  Replogle Globes, Inc. Chicago. c1954. Dull paper gores over hollow orb, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in deep  pea green with a few nautical distances and the International  Date Line. Mounted on articulated conforming ferrules refinished in black. Surface re-shellacked 'antique' style and custom mounted. On an ebonized cross stretcher table stand with four vertical turned legs, each topped by turned brass finials. Stand partially finished in green to match the globe surface. While made from some small piece of furniture, the mounting is well thought out and stylish with a decided arts and crafts image. Custom globe mountings are often the creations of antique dealers, using salvaged parts, having a makeshift aspect. This effort is unusual and unusually successful.  I.D.#09975.   (have more photos if needed)

Landmasses in green, oceans in medium blue. Longitude and latitude scales marked on surface. Strap steel articulated ferules on round press steel conical base with hole for wall mounting, finished in blue gray. Classroom training apparatus for geography or navigation training. Outlines the landmasses shows only major rivers. Surface nice, metal parts should be resprayed silvertone. I.D.#08975. SOLD.

Nystrom, A.J. & Co. Nystrom 16 inch Physical-Political globe. Edited by A.E. Parkins... Base printed in Great Britain. Chicago. c1955. Coated paper gores over white plastic. No time dial. Oceans finished in avocado green with International Date Line, ocean currents and deeps, with tropics called sun-lines. Umounted and resting in blond wood cross cradle with felt. Simplified surface with stress on physical features. Surface checked with some abrasions and recoloring. I.D.#08087.

Wall mounted schoolroom globe on steel frame pivoting on axis and seasonal declination. Frame slightly bent, part of surface darkened. I.D.#02773.

RAND MCNALLY CENTENNIAL GLOBE WITH HINGED  HORIZON RING

Rand McNally & Company. Rand McNally Centennial Sixteen globe.  1 inch = 500 miles...  Rand McNally & Company. Chicago. 1955. Coated paper gores over pasteboard, time dial at  North Pole does not move. Oceans finished in robin's egg blue  with International Date Line and analemma scale with explanation  note. A schoolroom globe with its emphasis on physical geography. Topographical features emphasized with fewer than usual place  names. In an art deco bent wire cradle with unique hinged horizon ring at equator. Very dust soiled with many small surface  abrasions. Horizon ring scale rust spotted. Vietnam and Korea  divided but prior to the United Arab Republic period.  'Centennial' probably refers to the hundredth anniversary period  of Rand McNally.  I.D.#06295.

De facto boundaries of 1957 are shown without reference to their status in international agreements. Denoyer-Geppert Co. Chicago. 1957 (actual date). Coated paper gores over pasteboard. No time dial or meridian. Oceans finished light blue with continental shelves in white. Laid into blond wood cradle with horizon ring scale, green felt bolsters. Very nice schoolroom globe actually dated. I.D.#06219.

Light burn spot near North Pole.  On Duncan Phyfe  style walnut floor stand with metal sabots. Handsome globe ensemble. I.D.#10056.  

 

 

WALNUT DUNCAN PHYFE FULL MOUNT STAND, LIGHTED

See Great Circle Measuring Scale along 30 W. longitude.  Rand McNally & Company. Chicago. c1960. Coated paper gores over glass, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in pea green with International Date Line, tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and a few airline distances. Cast brass plate metal full ring meridian in walnut cradle on a Duncan Phyfe style walnut four-leg floor stand. Full mount basket revolves on turned column. Locates Eniwetok Atoll where atomic bomb tests were held.  A fine illuminated large home library globe with quality approximating globes from the twenties and thirties. I.D.#10023. 

 

 

FIRST "TUFFY" PLASTIC ORB

Cram, George F. Company. 16 inch Detailed Physical-Political globe. Cram's (Since 1867) The George F. Cram Company. Indianapolis. c1961. Dull paper gores over plastic. Oceans finished a medium blue. Shows nautical distances, International Date Line, Equinoctial Colure, land elevations and water depths and with large analemma scale in Pacific. Laid into a crackle-finished steel cradle with horizon ring supported by six conforming steel struts. Horizon ring base designed by the late Mr. Douthit, president of The George F. Cram Company. Horizon ring shows distances, time and latitude with degree scales. Egypt and Syria joined as United Arab Republic, 1958-1961. Cram's best schoolroom globe of the period, employing their new (1958) "Tuffy" unbreakable plastic orb; a strong selling point for globes used in schoolrooms over pasteboard orbs. First Tuffy in the 16" orb size. Face somewhat soiled with cigar burn damage spots on orb and horizon scale. I.D.#04959.

"TUFFY" ORB SCHOOLROOM GLOBE

Oceans finished a medium blue. Shows nautical distances, International Date Line, Equinoctal Colure, land elevations and water depths and with large analemma scale in Pacific. Laid into a crackle-finished steel Douthit cradle with horizon ring supported by six conforming steel struts. Horizon ring shows distances, time and latitude with degree scales. Only Egypt shown as United Arab Republic. Slightly later edition of I.D.#05959, also printed in 1962. Cram's best schoolroom globe of the period, very comprehensive. I.D.#07552.

Dull coated paper gores over plastic, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in an unusual shade of deep green, with nautical currents emphasized. Shows elliptic, equinoctial colure, a few nautical distances and analemma. Cast gilded iron full ring meridian in conforming cast ferule, raised on round stepped crackle finished pressed steel base. Map surfaces show only Egypt as United Arab Republic. Gores loosening from orb with margin losses, surface shows sun crackling. I.D.#09962. SOLD.

Denoyer-Geppert Co. Cartocraft Visual-Relief 16 inch globe. Edited by C.B. Odell... Chicago. c1964. Coated paper gores over plastic, without time dial. Oceans and continents colored similarly to their schoolroom maps, with International Date Line, Ecliptic and analemma. Full schoolroom demonstration mount with all wood horizon ring articulated to chromed conforming ferule on square blond wood base with adjustable cast iron bracket. Only Egypt remains as United Arab Republic. Few slight surface blemishes and surface soiling. Good school globe. I.D.#07289.

Chicago. ©1964. Dull paper gores over clear plastic, time dial at North Pole. Oceans colored olive green, with International Date Line and some nautical distances. Mounted on a walnut Phyfe style full mount stand with incurvate legs and brass sabots dating from the 1930's. Internally lighted the ensemble shows a nice period effect. Couple surface blemishes restored. Only Egypt shown as United Arab Republic. I.D.#07338.

On mount of articulated strap steel, blacked, with round cone base with wall hanging hole. Emphasis on physical rather than political features. Mountain heights and ocean depths shows by varying shades of color. Only Egypt shown as United Arab Republic. Surface very soiled and dusty, tape stuck to surface, losses near equator. I.D.#09024.

In full mount mahogany Duncan Phyfe floor stand with four legs; large, carved barrel and four arm cradle basket for globe. Handsome library globe. Very good condition and antique look. Gilded full ring cast metal meridian that swiveles from conforming ferules above a Duncan Phyfe walnut floor stand. Internally lighted. Beautiful condition. I.D.#10024.

Shows International Date Line, ocean currents, Sargasso Sea and analemma. Some topography. Cradle not original but is a Beckly-Cardy blonde wood table cradle. Shows the Central African Empire. Stand repaired, some surface rubbing losses in ocean areas. Scarce single year globe. May lack horizon ring attachment. I.D.#08113.

Large schoolroom instructional globe with markable dull coated gores over pasteboard. With neither North Pole dial nor analemma. Time and great circle distances are determined by a compass and 24 hour scale around the black plastic table base. Dual full ring clear plastic meridia, one fixed the other moveable, with scales; that which moves determines the time from the scale on the base. Topographical features are emphasised with only a few major place names including Ho Chi Minh City. One surface dent and some abrasions, equator band present but completely detached. I.D.#04368.
