 GREAT WAR PERIOD FULL MOUNT RESIDENTIAL GLOBE 

W. & A.K. Johnston. 12 Inch International Globe Constructed from the latest authorities. Warranted absolutely accurate. [title on label] ... Copyright by W. & A.K. Johnston Ltd. W. & A.K. Johnston. Edinburgh. c1915. 12 inch plaster orb with coated very detailed steel engraved gores, Oceans in olive green with time dial at North Pole. Ocean currents and isothermal lines emphasized but with equator, ecliptic and large analemma and undersea cables. International Date Line in red. Full ring cast iron meridian mounted in a conforming cradle raised on a bronze three leg table stand with paw feet and raised floral motifs. Cradle supports a laminated wood horizon ring with colored meridian table with months, zodiac signs, time degree scale. Mountain ranges shown with minute hachures. Petrograd shown in Russia but not yet Czechoslovakia. Huge Austro-Hungarian Empire. Some surface soiling, discoloring and small blemishes, horizon ring scale chipped with some losses but an ideal World War I period globe.  I.D.#10060.

CLASSIC RAND MCNALLY ON FULL MOUNT

Rand McNally & Co.'s New Twelve Inch Terrestrial globe. Chicago. 1916 Revised. Coated paper gores over plaster, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in avocado green with Ecliptic, Equinoctial Colure, Isothermal Lines and elliptical analemma. On the full mount stand of full ring firmly fixed to the patented Rand McNally tripod Gothic Revival stand with wooden horizon ring with paper scale. Stand incorporates the three globe bosses, three globes being grasped by talons and the company cipher within escuscheons. Same orb as I.D.#07286 but on the most complete mount. Once repaired and partially relacquered in southern hemisphere. I.D.#08291.

Rand, McNally & Co.'s New Twelve Inch Terrestrial globe. Chicago. 1916 Revised (actual date) ©1891. Coated paper gores over pasteboard, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in dark blue green with Equinoctial Colure, Ecliptic, Isothermal lines, ocean currents and O-form analemma. Axis pivoting only without meridian, from offset bracket mounted on Rand, McNally gothic revival bronze tripod stand. Very few surface blemishes but two long cracks in Pacific and Asia areas. Nice Rand, McNally globe from the middle of the Great War. I.D.#07286.

Rand McNally & Co.'s New Twelve Inch Terrestrial globe. Chicago. 1916, revised (actual date). Coated paper gores over metal, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in pea green with isothermal lines, ecliptic, equinoctial colure, ocean currents and elliptical analemma scale. Full mount cast iron table stand with patented Rand McNally gothic tripod base, cast full ring meridian in cradle with thumb screw adjuster to which is fixed a wooden horizon ring with lithographed month and latitude scale. Shows Petrograd in Russian, German colonies in Africa. I.D.#08773.

Oceans finished in avocado green with Equinoctial Colure, Ecliptic, tropics of Cancer and  Capricorn, isothermal lines and ocean currents. Cast bronze offset bracket with spindle on raised tripod base with paw feet. Petrograd shown in Russia, pre-Versailles Europe. Russia called Russian Empire. Nice condition. SOLD. I.D.#10098.

Oceans finished in dark avocado green with isothermal lines, ecliptic, Equinoctial Colure/International Date Line, ocean currents and analemma. Offset cast bracket on Weber Costello tripod stand with paw feet. Still shows Austria-Hungary in Europe, Petrograd in Russia but German colonies gone from Africa. Copper engraved gores done in Edinburgh. Interesting Great War issue showing major world railroads. Quite handsome. I.D.#08776.

Weber Costello Co. Peerless 6 inch globe. Terrestrial globe... Pat. Aug. 3, 1909 Copyrighted. Weber Costello Co. Chicago Heights, Ill. 1918. Coated paper gores over pasteboard, without time dial. Oceans finished in pale gray with Equinoctial Colure, Ecliptic, tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and analemma with note. Bent wire stand without meridian. Child's individual schoolroom globe. Few surface dents in southern hemisphere, losses from horizon scale and dust soiling yet well preserved. Still shows "Congo State" which became the Belgian Congo in 1908 but now with "Petrograd" in Russia, a name first used in 1914. German colonies gone in Africa, Austria-Hungary broken up but the Versailles borders not yet shown in Europe. Interesting pre-Versailles Treaty version. I.D.#08982.

CHILD'S SCHOOL GLOBE 

Rand, McNally & Co. Rand, McNally New Six Inch Terrestrial globe. Pat Aug. 3, 1909 Copyrighted. Rand, McNally & Co. Chicago. 1919. Colored gores on coated stock over pasteboard without time dial or meridian. Oceans finished pea green, analemma scale in Pacific. Attractive title graphics. On bent wire stand fashioned to correct inclination. Detailed map surface, orb may have been available on other mounts. Post Versailles Treaty Europe with Polish Corridor and Czechoslovakia, German colonies gone from Africa, Russia is shown during the Kerensky Provisional Government period with St. Petersburg still called "Petrograd" rather than Leningrad, Baltic states still independent. Afghanistan is called "Balochistan", Indo China called "Annam". Mongolia and Manchuria are a part of "China" which was the Chinese Republic. Losses to equator scale with separating. Individual children's schoolroom globes such as this are fragile. I.D.#10044.

American? untitled. [Arts and Crafts copper clad hemispheres] Hand wrought half spheres, copper over plaster, each showing an art representation of the Eastern Hemisphere. Weighted, serves as bookends. American. c1920. I.D.#09919.

Orb within conforming ferule made from stamped tin atop round tan finished base of the same material. Different surface from I.D.#08081 and by another manufacturer. I.D.#08126.

 

BOHEMIAN CARVED MUSE STAND

Roztok ach u Prahy. c1920. 12 inch earth globe, metal and plaster, coated paper gores. Time dial lacking. Oceans finished in pale green with ecliptic and extensive ocean currents. Surface text entirely in Czech emphasizing Czechoslovakia as an independent country. Shows Petrograd in Russia. Post Versailles Treaty borders. Mounted above a carved blackwood muse figure of Bohemian origin, holding a bouquet in her right hand. Base at her feet seems replaced. No meridian. Scarce newel post pedistal globe. Overall height 40 inches. I.D.#09987.

American? untitled. [Art Moderne copper clad hemispheres with a nude boy atop each] Half spheres, copper over plaster, each showing an artistic molding of two nude boys in contemplation atop a globe of the earth. Serves as bookends.  American. c1920. I.D.#10147.

American. "Kitsch" globe. Art globe bank/paperweight. 3" orb on ornate catafalque-like base. Bronzed white metal, weighted. With motto, "Conquer the world's unrest by saving and thrift. Pat. Aug. 30, 1921. American. 1921. Rare advertising bank. Handsome. I.D.#07772.

Base red finished standing pencil sharpener, orb within conforming wire ferule. Design different from I.D.#08081. Shows prewar map but issued after World War 1. Rusted, distressed condition. Rand McNally & Company. Terrestrial globe 12 inch. Rand McNally & Co. Chicago. c1921. Fine private residence table globe with dull paper gores over plaster, brass time dials at both North and South Poles. Oceans tinted a bright blue green. Unusual large analemma scale in Pacific and gives currents, isothermal lines and ice flows. Without meridian but raised on a heavy modernistic style cast metal tripod stand with stylized leaf and shield design. Treaty of Versailles Europe, Chinese Republic, Italian Somaliland, etc. Unusually fine condition. I.D.#04066.  SOLD.

IMMEDIATE POST-VERSAILLES BOUNDARIES

Rand McNally & Co. Rand McNally & Company Terrestrial globe 12 inch. Made in U.S.A. Chicago. 1922. Dull paper gores over metal, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in pale blue appearing green due to lacquer. With ecliptic, Equinoctial colure ocean currents and elliptical analemma. Full mount cast iron table stand with patented Rand McNally gothic tripod base, cast bronze full ring meridian in cradle with thumbscrew adjuster. Walnut horizon ring an expert reproduction. Shows "Czecho-Slovakia", "Kingdom of the Serbs-Croats-Slovenes." Russian Empire broken up but with Petrograd still shown. Rare short-lived map surface. With cartographic error: No Slovenes but Slavs lived in Yugoslavia. I.D.#08774. SOLD.

Dull paper gores over plaster, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in pea green with Ecliptic, nautical distances from England, major railroads and physical features of the earth. Locates Northern Equatorial Current, California Current, etc., ocean depths. Simplified surface printed in England retailed by Hammond in New York. American cast solid bronze full ring meridian raised from bronze tripod table base with paw feet. Shows Petrograd in Russia, post-Versailles Treaty boundaries in Europe. German colonies gone from Africa, Czechoslovakia shown but name abbreviated. Some joint discoloration but in remarkably clean attractive condition with a very legible surface. I.D.#09906.

Coated paper gores printed in Scotland, over plaster, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in avocado green with Equinoctial Colure/International Date Line, Ecliptic isothermal lines, ocean currents, topography and analemma. Hanging schoolroom globe with suspension bracket fixed to cast bronze full ring meridian. Cords and weight lacking, meridian repaired. Else fine, scarce globe. Shows post-Versailles Europe. Rath, Paul. Lipsia-Erdglobus 33 cm. Paul Rath G.m.b.H. Leipzig (on label) Die Erde nach den neuesten Erforschungen und besten Quellen bearbeitet. Paul Rath. Leipzig. 1923. 13" orb without time dial. Oceans finished in parchment tan, landmasses shown in a lighter shade tan bordered in green. Shows Equator, Ecliptic and Prime Meridian only and broad bands of ocean currents. Europe shows "Tschech-Slow." and other post-Versailles borders. German colonies gone from Africa. Still shows Petersburg in the "Russische S-Reich". While the Russians changed it to Petrograd in 1914 to avoid a German-sounding name, the Germans continued to call it Petersburg. "Australien" takes in all of Polynesia. Offset steel bracket and axis spindle raised from a turned round column and turned round wooden base. Minor surface damage but an interesting globe from a period the Germans wished later to forget. OUTSTANDING 18 INCH SIZE ON ART NOUVEAU SOLID BRASS FLOOR STAND

Weber Costello Co. WC [logo] 18 Inch globe. Made by Weber Costello Co. Chicago Heights, Ill... Printed in England... [by] G.W. Bacon & Co. Ltd... Weber Costello Co. Chicago. c1920. Coated paper gores over plaster, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in light pea green with Equinoctial Colure, Ecliptic, isothermal lines, ocean currents, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and analemma. Cast brass full ring meridian on art nouveau brazier-style floor stand with mahogany horizon ring above three conforming brackets and incurvate legs, flame motif, with round, clear marble casters. Same style ornamental floor stand as on I.D.#07337 but 18-inch size and in solid brass. Corrosion spots to upper hemisphere, horizon ring has been replaced with fine mahogany replacement. Still shows Petrograd in Russia, post-Versailles European borders. Exceedingly handsome ornamental globe intended for the mansion or top executive office. Overall 46 inches high. Conforming brass plated ferule raised on an ebonised turned column and round turned plinth base. Slight repairs to base, bottom grommet replaced. Bottom pin screw lacking. Surface with a few small scuffs, vertical crack in Pacific Ocean area. Shows Leningrad in Russia, Palestine called Levant. British Empire in pink. Cast bronze full ring meridian in cradle with set screw for securing meridian; full mount table stand with horizon ring and four turned legs and stretchers. Post-Versailles Europe. Oceans finished in tan, time dial at North Pole. Nautical distances and analemma only. On a cast iron naturalistic tripod mounting with paw feet. Shows Polish Corridor in Europe, 'Leningrad (Petrograd)' in Russia, Manchuria still independent, Korea called Chosen. Some surface darkening and repairs. Residential library table globe from the mid Twenties. I.D.#08207.

 HANDSOME DOUBLE SOCKET GLOBE LAMP

Rand McNally & Company. Rand McNally eight-inch terrestrial globe. Rand McNally & Company. Chicago. c1925. Dull paper gores over bakelite, without time dial. Oceans finished in pea green with Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, nautical distances in red, International Date Line and analemma. Land masses shown in tan. Mounted within a full-mount of solid brass, bronzed, with unmarked ferules impaled with an arrow raised on a bell-form base above which is a double socket with finial of dolphins. A handsome well-constructed art moderne lamp and not the unual globe lamp intended for a child's room. Orb surface shows Leningrad, Russia (not USSR), Persia, Siam, Baluchistan, etc. Mid-1920's geography. Nice age patina. Unusual.  I.D.#09981. (have more photos if needed)

Printed in England.  Weber Costello Co. Chicago Heights, Il. c1925. A Weber Costello globe, with English Bacon gores,  retailed by Hammond and charged with their title label obscuring  that of the manufacturer. Coated paper gores over cork, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in pale blue with ocean currents,  isothermal lines, trade winds and analemma. The emphasis is on  weather producing factors. Offset mounted on a solid bronze three-legged Weber Costello style table stand. British Empire in  pink. Shows Leningrad in Russia. Example of cooperation in commercial cartography. Nicely preserved and handsome.  I.D.#08294. SOLD.

EARLY NOVELTY GLOBE: CARDINAL RICHELIEU & CALIF AS AN ISLAND + LIONS, TIGERS, BEARS & ELEPHANTS. OH MY!

French. Sphere Terrestre. Avec les grands derniers decouvertes selon le Planisphere universel fait par Yan Guerard, de Dieppe, par l'ordre du Cardinal Richelieu, ministre du Roi Louis XIII. La Rochelle. 1634. Paris. c1925> Interesting rather crude facsimile of the Richelieu globe, created in La Rochelle by Yan Guerard in 1634. 10 inch orb. Gores coming loose from orb with some loss of paper. On a wrought iron and carved wood mount. Interesting early novelty globe. I.D.#10091.

Axis pivoting only without meridian, from cast ornamental offset bracket with finial mounted on a redesigned modernistic bronzed cast iron table stand with embossed cartouches and fern leaves design on curved legs. Petrograd now called Leningrad in Russia, no Japanese incursions into the Republic of China. A couple slight surface dents but in fine condition. Overall height 19 inches. I.D.#04797.

SCARCE ADVERTISING GLOBE

Cram, George F. Co. Cram's 7 inch globe.  The George F. Cram Co. Indianapolis. c1927. Rare 7 inch version of advertising globe manufactured by Cram. 7 inch orb with dull paper gores over  pasteboard, time dial at North Pole missing. Oceans tinted blue but lacquered so as to become a pea green, analemma scale in  Pacific. Few ocean distances and ecliptic. Table mount with bent steel ferule above a green tone base inset with notes about the earth and its motions. Simplified surface.   Manchuria still independent. Shows French Indo China and Siam. Versailles Treaty borders in Europe, Anglo-Egyptian Sudan in Africa. Surface abrasions and wear but very scarce odd size. "Distributed By The Circulation Department The Bellingham Herald Bellingham - Washington". Spacer at South Pole replaced. I.D.#10156.

MASSIVE 18 INCH SUSPENSION GLOBE

Rand McNally 18 inch globe. Rand McNally & Company. Chicago/NY. c1927. Dull paper gores over plaster, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in pale blue with ocean depths and continents in tan. Shows equinoctial colure, ecliptic, nautical distances in red, ocean depths, tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Treaty of Versailles boundaries. Massive cast iron full meridian nickel-plated. Moveable pulley at top. Lacks round iron (moon) counterweight. Normally schoolroom suspension globes that survive have been severely abused. Great dents appear where students have smashed the counter weight against the surface. While the shellacked surface here has minor peeling, the surface is very legible and intact. I.D.#09941.

Oceans finished in a dark pea green, nautical distances and analemma only. On a cast iron art mounting, green-toned patina, modernistic style, with offset bracket ending in a stylized lotus, raised on six-footed round base with recessed band of laurel leaves. Shows Polish Corridor in Europe, Leningrad in Russia, Manchuria still independent, Korea called Chosen. Some surface darkening and surface rubbing with losses. Slight roughness at equator. A later version of I.D.#04008, a good residential library table globe from the late Twenties. I.D.#06417.

Earlier version of I.D.#04801 with very much simpler map surfaces. Very fine condition. Near new. I.D.#06555. SOLD.

Emphasis is on physical features. Shows Leningrad in Russia but with Manchuria still independent. Shows British Mandate in Palestine. Discolorations at joints and some dust soiling. I.D.#08093.

Cast bronze full ring meridian raised above cast red bronze gothic revival tripod table stand with embossed vine and floral motifs, incurvate legs bosses on knees ending in paw feet. Very legible map surface that shows many place names and railroads. Shows Leningrad in Russia and Manchuria before the Japanese invasion. Shows King George V Land in Antarctica. Some restoration in Canada, Central Asia, and East Indies. A dramatic top of the line fine residence library globe envisioned for the large home or mansion or university library. I.D.#05036.

Oceans finished in pea green with International Date Line, Ecliptic, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and large analemma. Cast bronze full ring meridian in moveable cradle mounted to adjustable lecture platform floor stand. Good physical globe without national boundaries but showing major cities. Heights of some mountains given and many oceanic "deeps". Orb damaged, but repairable, with crack in south Atlantic and surface loss in central Africa. Cradle handcrafted and rewelded. A good geographer's globe. I.D.#07545.

Oceans finished in olive green, with Equinoctial Colure, Ecliptic, nautical distances in red and large analemma. An attractive home table globe retailed by Barowe, successors to Prouty, Chicago.
