UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC - GERMAN FOR THE FRENCH MARKET - BLACK OCEAN ART DECO PLANE BASE

German MS. untitled [terrestrial globe with surface in French] 6" transfer painted hollow metal orb, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in black with ocean routes shown with planes and ships but no numerical distances. Plastic art deco table stand with half meridian supported by conforming structural support raised above amorphous plane/train/boat form base of red plastic. MS. Germany. 1960. "Made in West Germany" but using French names.  Rather detailed showing each state in the United States, both Egypt and Syria colored in vertical stripes as United Arab Republic. One small surface dent. Unusual late deco piece. I.D.#10298. 

Rand McNally & Company. Rand McNally Centennial Twelve globe. 1 inch = 666 miles... Rand McNally & Company. Chicago. 1960. Coated paper gores over pasteboard, no time dial. A schoolroom globe with its emphasis on physical geography. Time and compass headings are determined by a 24 hour scale around the tan plastic cradle base. Articulated full ring strap meridian and half meridian markers with scales. Topographical features emphasized with fewer than usual place names. With the United Arab Republic political union. 'Centennial' probably refers to the hundredth anniversary of Rand McNally. Good condition. I.D.#06125.

RARE SCHOOL GLOBE WITH "DAILY SUN RAY AND SEASON INDICATOR"

Cram, George F. Co. 12 inch Terrestrial globe Natural scale 1 = 41,817,600 One Inch = 660 Statute Miles. Length of a degree of longitude is shown at each 10 degrees of latitude along the 30th meridian west, thus [69.14 mi.] No. 53 C260. The George F. Cram Co., Inc.. Indianapolis. 1960. Coated paper gores over hollow plastic orb, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished deep blue with Equinoctial Colure, Ecliptic, ocean currents boldly outlined, and analemma scale. Cast gilded metal meridian on short stepped column finished dark brown above large round crackle-finished steel base. Scarce schoolroom demonstration model with articulated revolving cast metal "Sun Rays" indicator with pointer at foot directed to a colored paper scale on the base surface, sub-titled, "Cram's Deluxe Globe with automatic Daily Sun Ray and Season Indicator." Emphasis on seasons and physical features. Shows Egypt and Syria joined into United Arab Republic. Unusual color on surface. Sturdy professional quality. Extraordinary globe. I.D.#07903.  SOLD.

Shows International Date Line, tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, airline distances and analemma in Pacific. Detailed and attractive surface with national boundaries absent or muted. Cast metal full ring meridian mounted on a custom cast aluminum modernistic floor stand with three stylized lily pad feet. United Arab Republic period. Attractive home globe. I.D.#09000.

Coronelli, manner of Vicenzo Maria (1650-1718). untitled. [UG Mercurio d'Ora ?]. Rome. c1960. 5" diameter plastic orb with coated paper gores. Finished antique style with oceans in a dark pea green in simulation of a classic Venetian original. Stained plywood full ring meridian raised on a felted wood pedestal base. More attractive than most reproductions. I.D.#03285.

 

Coronelli, manner of Vicenzo Maria (1650-1718). untitled. [UG Mercurio d'Ora ?]. Rome. c1960. 6 1/2" diameter, 10 1/2" high. Full mounted with circular meridian, movable, on four leg table stand. Antiqued finish paper gores over plastic. A rough facsimile of a globe of the 17th century similar to those of Father Coronelli. Made in Italy. Very decorative, I.D.#03445.

Airline distances given in statute miles and length of flight duration. Home table mounting with a nicely molded silvertoned fixed cast metal half meridian on a round steel brushed silvertone base. Highly detailed political surface with many place names and with geographic notes in red. From the period when Egypt and Syria were joined politically as the United Arab Republic, 1958-1961. Fixed plastic half meridian, raised on pressed metal base finished in gold and black with zodiac signs. Simplified map. Shows Glenn's orbital flight, a divided Vietnam and Korea. Airline distances with propeller driven planes and stops at Wake Island. Surface pitting and abrasions. Model D-174. I.D.#07157.

Chein, J. & Company. 7.5 inch World globe. J. Chein & Company. Burlington, NJ. c1960. Child's steel transfer painted table globe. Unusually complete map surfaces with oceans in medium blue and time dial at North Pole. Shows ecliptic, equinoctial colure, airline distances and Lindbergh and Graf Zeppelin world flights routes and dates. Post WW2 borders in Europe and former colonies shown in Africa. Conforming ferule fixed orb to an octagonal stamped metal base giving the seasons and zodiac scale in bright colors. J. Chein logo found on base in the May location. Lacks time dial, surface dents and abrasions. I.D.#10031.

Rand, McNally & Company. Rand McNally Terrestrial globe. Diameter 12 inches. Distances in statute miles. One inch equals 666 miles. [Model] A-110000-252-2-2-2-3-1-2. Rand McNally & Company. Chicago. c1960. Coated gores over plastic with oceans finished in light blue. Electrically lighted within with switch on cord. Time dial at North Pole. Pacific area shows International Date Line, tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, and aerial distances only. Nicely designed brass plated half meridian table mount on round brass plated base. Egypt and Syria colored the same but only Egypt still designated United Arab Rep. Madagascar called Malagasy Republic, a political designation not mentioned on the Replogle website political changes list. Madagascar had achieved independence from France in 1960 and named itself Malagasy Republic after the language spoken there. Surface of base somewhat pitted, sort of like the moon. An attractive and well constructed table globe. I.D.#10289.  

 

Coronelli, manner of Vicenzo Maria (1650-1718). AD 1492 Christofory Colomboro rom ne Regis austr le prealae detectu [UG Mercurio d'Ora ?]. Rome. c1960. 5.5" diameter plastic orb with coated paper gores. Finished antique style with oceans in dark tan. Continents in green in simulation of a classic Venetian original. Stained plywood full ring meridian raised on four turned leg full mount stand. Horizon ring shows zodiac figures in red and green. Better made than most tourist souvenir globes. Round sticker on bottom reads Made in Italy. I.D.#10313.

 

 

LARGE PROJECT GLOBE

Nystrom, A. J. & Co. untitled. Graphic Project globe A.J. Nystrom & Co. Chicago. c1960. 21 inch diameter plastic orb. Completely without lettering, surface refinished in amateur fashion, oceans in blue, continents in green. Square stainless steel full ring meridian on conforming support. On a round pressed stainless steel base with hole for wall mounting. Classroom globe for group instruction. An adult teaching aid believed government issue as commercial globe orbs were never of this diameter. Decal on base gives instruction for used of analemma scale fixed to meridian. Long crack in plastic near equator, some surface rust on base. I.D.#08208b.

 

Replogle Globes, Inc. Replogle Stereo Relief globe. Diameter 12 inches. Replogle Globes, Inc.. Chicago. c1960. Coated relief gores over pasteboard, time dial at North Pole. Maps colored in light blues with ocean currents, International Date Line and a few nautical distances. Goldtoned steel stamped meridian articulated to conforming ferule on round woodgrained metal base. Both Egypt and Syria still called United Arab Republic. Some surface rubbing. I.D.#08969.  

 

Italian. 20th century. "Coctioes a uscrueo nonmus Magellan ore a glioh e usnes rentore no upuat." [sic]. Rome ?. c1960 ?. 6 inch hollow plastic orb with photolithographed surface in reproduction of a 16th century original. On full mount stand with full ring meridian scale with temperature zones, horizon ring with degree scale and months and zodiac signs, on four turned wood legs with broad table stretcher. 9.5 inches high, 9.5 inches wide. Aside from very expensive facsimiles being offered in the 1990's, this is a cute commercial reproduction suitable for decorating. Nice condition. I.D.#10197.

Tokyo ?. c1960 ?. 4" half-orb of silvered lucite mounted as stand for rocket form butane lighter. Overall height 7 inches. Curious Sputnik era novelty. I.D.#10234.

Base metal toy bank consisting of silvered sun in center surrounded by representations of the orbits of the planets. Cast aurora blue toned, with planets represented by rubber inserts. Unusual "space age" toy. I.D.#07290.

BLACK OCEANS WITH ARTICULATED HORIZON RING

Rand McNally & Company. Rand McNally World globe... Chicago. c1960. 12" orb. Coated paper gores over pasteboard, without time dial. Oceans finished in black with International Date Line, tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, jet airline distances and analemma with note on purpose. Chromed strapwork steel articulated horizon ring and full ring meridian with scales on round conical base. Some pitting of chrome, few small surface dents. United Arab Republic period.  I.D.#07923.  

 

 

Chein, J. & Co. Globe Bank. Burlington, NJ. c1960. 4.5" transfer painted tin bank formed as globe. Company logo on surface near Alaska. Twist off base opener, white finished base spangled with red stars. Mounted vertically without declination. Some discrepancies in lower hemisphere. One small dent, otherwise fine. Egypt and Syria the same color. Evangelistic quotation stamped on surface, "For God so loved the world." I.D.#08078.

 

SCARCE: CHINA LABELED "COMMUNIST"

Cram, George F. Co. 8 inch Terrestrial globe. Natural Scale 1:62,782,700. 991 Statute Miles = One Inch. Spellings conform to official rulings of United States Geographic Board and Royal Geographical Society... No. 80... C560. Indianapolis. c1960. Coated paper gores over pasteboard, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in medium blue with Equinoctial Colure-International Date Line, some ocean currents, few nautical distances in red, and analemma. Mount is gilded curved metal ferule welded to welded bent wire stand. Interesting child's table globe United Arab Republic period. China labelled "Communist". Unusual designation. I.D.#08159.  

 

Italian. 20th Century. "Globo Terraequeo Secondo intendimenti di studiosi e navigatori dell'epoca. Anni - 1616-1622." P.I.. Rome. c1960. Ice bucket with cover formed in imitation of an antique original. 9" diameter. Turned raised walnut base. Label on base reads "Olde World Globe... Made in Italy." Well constructed. Near new condition. I.D.#10403. 

 

LIGHTED GLOBE

Coated paper gores over plastic, wired for electricity, lighted from within. Time dial at North Pole missing. Oceans finished in pea green. Nice mount with cast metal half meridian on round stamped base. Very detailed reference surface with Egypt and Syria united as United Arab Republic. Some gores loose or discolored at margins I.D.#09922b. 

 

CAST BRASS ORNAMENTAL GLOBE

American. untitled. 4.5 inch orb on trumpet form stand. Land masses polished, oceans show latitude and longitude lines. n.p. c1960? n.d. Does not appear commercial. Maybe a corporate gift or favor from a brass foundry firm. I.D.#08288.  

 

 

Coronelli, manner of Vicenzo Maria (1650-1718). "Orbis terrestis..." [Reproduction miniature globe]. c1960. 1.5" orb nicely lithographed colored gores. Imbedded in plastic as a paperweight. Yellowed, corner chips. Similar to 17th century globes by Fr. Coronelli.  I.D.#08263.   

 

 

American School. Sculpture. untitled. [Full sculpted eagle atop globe of the earth] Cast brass welded. On turned brass plinth slotted as a bank. Orb moves within conforming cast ferule. Height 14.5 inches. American. c1960. Manner of the Case Tractor Company eagle. I.D.#10043.

Miniature table globe, 6" diam. colored, reproducing to a degree, an antique. Full mount turned wood stand in antique style. I.D.#10119.

Miniature table globe, 4.5" diam. colored, reproducing to a degree, an antique. Full mount turned wood stand in antique style.  I.D.#10122.

 

 

Rand McNally. Walt Disney Rand McNally World Globe one inch equals 1000 miles. Find out about the world with us - it's fun! Rand McNally. Chicago. 1960?. 8" transfer painted tin orb superimposed with Disney characters. Rather detailed map surfaces circa 1950 with African colonial designations still intact. On round pressed metal base with Disney character decals. An older globe updated by Walt Disney Productions. One dimple in surface but some stains and discolorations. I.D.#10011. 

 

RARE U.S.S.R. SPUTNIK SOUVENIR

untitled 2 inch gilt metal orb with the continents outlined in blind. Only Soviet Union marked CCCP. Bent conforming wire with red plastic rocket at end shows the orbit of the Sputnik. White bakelite base marked with date of the launch. Moscow. 1961. Scarce and attractive. I.D.#10185.

French?. 1961. 3" diameter orbs, photolithographed gores over metal within cast metal full ring meridians with precise scale. Pair, mounted as bookends. Very good color lithographed surfaces after an early French original. Browned hardwood on felted bases. Well constructed. I.D.#07326.  

  

Anonymous. "Kitsch" globe. untitled. [salt and pepper shakers] Japanese. C R. c1961. 2.25" orbs of blue and white pottery. Round bases marked C and R. Height 2.75 inches. With an odd slightly larger matching globe but without perforations 1964-New York World's Fair-1965. Label under base reads: Unisphere presented United States Steel. I.D.#10270.

The Ohio Art Co. untitled. [Transfer painted tin bank formed as a globe.] The Ohio Art Co. Bryan, Ohio. c1961. 4.5" diameter.  Model 378D177. Wood grained finish base lettered "Holy Childhood Association". Surface very good, two small dents, lock plate lacking. I.D.#03919. 

 

FIRST "TUFFY" PLASTIC ORB

Cram, George F. Company. 16 inch Detailed Physical-Political globe. Cram's (Since 1867) The George F. Cram Company. Indianapolis. c1961. Dull paper gores over plastic. Oceans finished a medium blue. Shows nautical distances, International Date Line, Equinoctial Colure, land elevations and water depths and with large analemma scale in Pacific. Laid into a crackle-finished steel cradle with horizon ring supported by six conforming steel struts. Horizon ring base designed by the late Mr. Douthit, president of The George F. Cram Company. Horizon ring shows distances, time and latitude with degree scales. Egypt and Syria joined as United Arab Republic, 1958-1961. Cram's best schoolroom globe of the period, employing their new (1958) "Tuffy" unbreakable plastic orb; a strong selling point for globes used in schoolrooms over pasteboard orbs. First Tuffy in the 16" orb size. Face somewhat soiled with few burn damage spots on orb and horizon scale. I.D.#04959.  

Coronelli, manner of Vicenzo Maria (1650-1718). untitled. Hong Kong. c1961. Miniature 3.5" diameter orbs, pair, mounted as bookends on oak bases. Antique style lithographed gores over plastic. Full ring meridian, axis pivoting. Rough facsimile of globes of the 17th century similar to those of Father Coronelli. Made in Hong Kong. I.D.#08248.

National Geographic Society. National Geographic Globe compiled and drawn in the cartographic division of The National Geographic Society,... Melville Bell Grosvenor, editor, James M. Darley, chief cartographer, Ralph E. McAleer, assistant chief cartographer, Wellman Chamberlin, cartographic engineer. Scale 1:41,817,600 or 660 miles to the inch... Manufactured by Replogle Globes... National Geographic Society. Washington, DC. c1961. (actual date). 12 inch pasteboard orb with coated colored gores lithographed by Hoen, Baltimore in traditional NGS map colors. Oceans finished in light blue with many physical geographical features (undersea plate zones, ocean currents, drifts, etc.) Shows the major recent political and exploring dates. Laid into a full mount clear lucite cradle stand above a clear lucite base with the NGS seal and a degree scale around margin. Equator ring shows scales for time and latitude. Fitted with a clear lucite cap called GEOMETER, giving degrees, statute miles, and kilometers, analemma scale and area scales in miles and kilometers. Shows United Arab Republic. Some surface abrasions, stand plastic yellowed. A highly precise and scientific table globe. First edition with name of asst. chief cartographer given in title. With printed guide booklet. Lighted electrically from within. Time dial at North Pole. Full ring thick brass engraved meridian. In massive four pillar oak stand with decoratively carved legs and central pivot on cross stretchers holding the globe's meridian ring on rollers for ease of movement. Definitive detail of political boundaries, railroads, highways, canals, steamship routes as well as physical features: waterfalls, dams, swamps, lakes, glaciers, shelf ice, banks, reefs, cays, mountain peaks, passes, deserts, ocean currents, plus "ruins" and "places of interest". The largest globe commercially produced in the U.S. Examples have been in use in the White House and other top executive locations. Custom designed and edited by Gustav Brueckmann, cartographer; revisions by LeRoy M. Tolman. This is the definitive globe for the period 1958-1962. Although the gores are not dated, the United Arab Republic is shown minus Syria, which was included until 1962. Enormous orb is 32 inches in diameter or nearly 100 inches in circumference. Including stand the height is four feet. The stand is 30 inches high by 41 inches wide at the bottom. Oceans finished a medium blue. Shows nautical distances, International Date Line, Equinoctial Colure, land elevations and water depths and with large analemma scale in Pacific. Laid into a crackle-finished steel cradle with horizon ring supported by six conforming steel struts. Horizon ring and base designed by the late Mr. Loren B. Douthit, president of The George F. Cram Company. Horizon ring shows distances, time and latitude with degree scales. Only Egypt is United Arab Republic (1958-1961). Cram's best schoolroom globe of the period, employing their new (1958) "Tuffy" unbreakable plastic orb; a strong selling point for globes used in schoolrooms over pasteboard orbs. Mr. Douthit liked to demonstrate their durability by dropping Tuffy orbs off a high balcony. Title in this later edition slightly altered. I.D.#10327.

Shows the Great Wall in China. Shows Korea and Vietnam divided, Pakistan undivided. Child's table globe without meridian, offset bracket on raised column on art modern round ornamented gilt base. Highly detailed for so small a surface. Unusual mount for a child's globe (and probably not original). With booklet 'Globe facts with question and answer quiz'. I.D.#10174.

Washington, DC. 1966, June (actual date). 12 inch plastic orb with coated colored gores lithographed by Hoen, Baltimore in traditional NGS map colors. Internally lighted. Laid into a full mount clear lucite cradle above a clear lucite base with the NGS seal and a degree scale around margin. Manufactured by Replogle for the National Geographic Society. Equator ring shows scales for time and latitude. LACKS the clear lucite cap giving degrees, statute miles, and kilometers, analemma scale and area scales in miles and kilometers. Orb surface shows ocean depths and currents. Egypt only called United Arab Republic. Of particular importance are key political dates useful in dating other globes. Vietnam divided on July 22, 1954, Korea divided July 27, 1953. A nice home globe, highly scientific. I.D.#10398.

Coated paper gores over heavy pasteboard orb.  Lacks time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in medium blue and land masses finished in similar colors as their schoolroom roller maps. Shows International Date Line, tropics of Cancer and  Capricorn, analemma, Trust regions in Pacific and an unmarked  eliptic. On blond oak flat base with steel conforming ferules  supporting moveable horizon ring. Emphasis is on physical  geography but has many place and national names and political  borders. Only Egypt remains United Arab Republic. Schoolroom  globe. Surface dusty. I.D.#09929.

Ocean depths and mountain heights, analemma, tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. On base with time and date scale stenciled on. Articulated goldtoned ferules, full ring meridian and sun rays ferule at right angles. Egypt now called Arab Republic of Egypt. Very minor surface blemishes. Excellent condition. Unusual Schoolroom globe for demonstrating the seasons. I.D.#14706.

Ring ferules that move but without meridian. Egypt and Syria no longer called United Arab Republic. Attractive school instructional globe on adjustable chrome platform stand. Very nice condition. On a crackle-finished steel cradle with meridian scale on horizon ring raised by four conforming steel  ferules; the Douthitt pattern mount. Laid into a full mount clear lucite conforming cradle above a clear lucite base with the NGS seal. Time and degree scale around horizon ring. Same geography as the 12 inch version but with added features. Exceptionally detailed and scientific surface showing geologic fracture zones, ocean currents, trade winds and small political notes on foreign possession and recent political changes. Their best table globe. I.D.#09972b.

Yellow finished base straited in red with title. Orb mounted vertically without declination. vividly colored simplified maps showing a divided Korea and Vietnam but with Pakistan east and west. Lock plate lacking. I.D.#05096.

Cast chromed full ring meridian articulated to conforming chromed ferules atop ebonized floor shaft on chromed conical base. Only Egypt shown as United Arab Republic.  I.D.#07262.

Denoyer Geppert Company. Cartocraft 24" reference globe. Edited by C.B. O'Dell... Denoyer Geppert Company. Chicago. c1967. Coated paper gores on hollow metal sphere. No time dial. Oceans finished in pale blue with continental shelves in white. Very comprehensive physical surface with ecliptic, analemma, International Date Line, ocean currents, tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, heights of mountains, depths of oceans, etc. With adjustable steel stand with two inclination positions and with adjustable wooden horizon ring with paper scale and trade label Cartocraft Vanguard Globe. Orb mounts within reinforced double ferules. Only Egypt still termed United Arab Republic. Probably created for military or Air Force instruction purposes. A really detailed large modern world globe. Nice condition. I.D.#08230. 

UNUSUAL 24 INCH SCHOOL GLOBE IN FULL MOUNT STAND

No time dial or meridian. Oceans finished light blue with continental shelves in white. Colors the same as on their schoolroom wall maps. With ocean currents, International Date Line, tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and large analemma. Egypt shown as United Arab Republic. Laid into blond wood table stand 35 inches high, with four legs, cradle and large shelf below. With horizon ring scale copyrighted by Denoyer-Geppert in 1954. Cradle with green felt bolsters. Orb protected by a conforming ferule that holds it within stand. A few surface blemishes and darkening where gores join. A splendid Cold War period school library globe attractive for a large home library. I.D.#10382.

Simplified surface with only Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn in Pacific. Some topography and mountain ranges. Spackle-painted steel ferule circumference pivots on ferule raised from conical steel base. Can be used on a table or hung from the wall. Good elementary school globe. I.D.#10072.

RARE SPUTNIK WINDUP GLOBE TOY IN ORIGINAL BOX

German J.G. Sch. untitled. J G SCH. Germany. c1968. Base says "Made in Germany; however, orb and box say "Made in Western-Germany" by J.G.SCH (over large "Z");also "Nr. 1000" on box. Picture on four panels of cardboard box showing rocket, flying saucer spaceship and Sputnik orbiting around the Earth. No words except those mentioned above. 2 3/4" transfer-painted tin orb with designations in English. Oceans finished in pale blue with small ships and airplanes. Very detailed. Raised on red column with incurved base decorated with flags, animals, cowboys, Indians, ship, etc. A North Pole-attached wire arm suspends a gilt Sputnik that is activated by a clockwork mechanism in base. Fragile, comes apart easily and is hard to reassemble. In original colored pasteboard box. Rare Sputnik toy in unusually fine condition. I.D.#10255.

On blue lucite cradle stand. With celluloid movable scale fixed at north and south poles. Does not show Tranquility Base, site of the first human lunar landing which is located in guide book. The Ohio Art Co. untitled. The Ohio Art Co. Bryan, Ohio. c1969. 9" transfer painted steel orb, time dial at North Pole. Oceans finished in robin’s egg blue with International Date  Line, nautical distances, airline routes for propeller driven  planes with stops at Wake Island. White plastic molded half  meridian attached to round pressed metal base finished in dark  grey with gilt zodiac signs. Tibet now absorbed into the People's Republic of China.
