CHARMING ENGLISH MINIATURE GLOBE SIGNED N. LANE 1776

N. Lane. New Globe of the Earth 2.75 inch orb with rather detailed surface dated 1776. Oceans finished in buff with strong equator, ecliptic and tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. As it also shows "Owhyhee Here C. Cook was Kill'd" one can assume it to be after 1779. Shows the track of Cook's voyage as well as Anson's tracks. Prime meridian still passes through the Canary Islands. Copper engraved gores over turned wood. In domed turned walnut desk case. Probably the same gores as Dekker (Greenwich) GLB0028. The gores signed "Prockter fc." Steel pins at both poles. Orb has had some recent professional restoration. N. Lane is known to have purchased and reused older gore plates some of which were used in the Nineteenth Century. This specimen is period and quite charming. N. Lane. London. 1776 title date but after 1779. Literature: Van der Krogt, P. (Old Globes); Dekker (Greenwich); Arkway, Cohen & Taliaferro, Cat. 64. I.D.#10240. (Have more photos if needed)

RARE EARLY AMERICAN TABLE GLOBE WITH MANUSCRIPT GORES

American. Anonymous. unlabeled and untitled. New England ?. c1820's. 6 inch orb with 18 gores over wood. Oceans finished in olive brown. The United States extends to the West Coast but Mexico takes up the Southwest. Shows Rio Colorado de Texas, Red River in northeast Mexico. In U.S. some Indian tribes located such as Blackfeet. Approximate dating derives from the naming of Australia as such rather than New Holland. Also shows Sydney as a city rather than Botany Bay. Mounts in a finely engraved brass full meridian within a delicate finely turned four leg table stand with four stretchers and a center supporting leg. Rather faded horizon ring scale hand lettered and hand colored.   Possibly unique early American globe. A handsome production posing a mystery about its creator. I.D.#10176.
