1800's
EXCEPTIONAL FULL
MOUNT FLOOR GLOBE
Copley,
Charles. Improved Globe. Boston... Manufactured by Gilman Joslin,
corrected to date. Charles Copley. New York. c1873. Gores and
horizon ring scale first copyrighted in New York by Copley in
1852, stand and fitting by Joslin, Boston. 16-inch hollow metal
orb dressed with plaster, with dull finish hand colored steel
engraved gores. Hand engraved nickel three-spoke time dial at
North Pole. Oceans finished in light tan, large analemma scale
with explanation in Pacific. Fine engraved nickel full ring
meridian moving within a walnut equator ring and thumbscrew clamp,
the ring supported by three conforming curved cast iron brackets.
Fitted atop a cast iron baluster column with acanthus leaf
embossing, raised on cast iron tripod legs with incurvate right
angle knees with similar embossing ending in inverted trumpet
flower feet. On wooden casters. The U.S. west shows the boundaries
of the immediate post Civil War with the Gadsden Purchase boundary
with Mexico (1854) incorrectly defined. The Dakotas are as yet
undivided since this occurred in 1889. Equatorial horizon ring
shows old repair with some losses to its steel engraved paper
scales that show zodiac signs and precise year time and seasons.
Surface loss in southern Africa area otherwise nicely preserved.
Overall height 42.5 inches. Fine private library globe. I.D.#04394.
SOLD.

RARE EGYPTIAN REVIVAL TRIPOD FLOOR STAND. WITH "NATIONAL PARK"
Joslin,
Gilman. Joslin's Terrestrial Globe containing all the late
discoveries and geographical improvements, also the tracks of the
most celebrated circumnavigators. Compiled from Smith's new
English Globe, with additions and improvements by Annin & Smith.
Revised by G.W. Boynton. Manufactured by Gilman Joslin. Boston.
c1873. (after 1872, before 1889). Handsome 12 inch floor globe
with engraved and hand colored gores over an orb of hollow metal
dressed in plaster. Time scales at North and South Poles are part
of the gore surface design, large analemma scale in Pacific.
Oceans finished a subdued tan, some exploration voyage track
dated. Engraved brass full ring meridian set within a cast iron
conforming cradle supporting wooden horizon ring with paper scale.
Raised on three turned screw-in black walnut legs that form a
tripod, paint and gilt decorated with bands of Egyptian motif.
Overall height 39 inches. Western United States shows National
Park (1872) and Dakota Territory undivided. Very nicely preserved
without blemishes to orb, few spots on horizon ring scale.
American globes prior to 1890 often used pre-Civil War maps as
their basis, updating geographical boundaries in colored inks on
the surface during coloring. Visual beauty rather than geographic
timeliness was often the rule. Boynton's revision makes real
changes to the engraving plate, "National Park" (Yellowstone)
being one. The beginning of accuracy in American globe
cartography. On a rare and exquisite floor stand. A true
conversation piece.

paper gores over hollow two piece steel orb, 77 cm. in diameter.
Oceans finished in gray-green with ecliptic, equator and usual
physical features found on large globes. In addition there has
been added in manuscript in colors, isothermal lines that pass
through Seattle, time zones, exact route of the International Date
Line and vulcanologic data on both earth and undersea eruptions;
all labeled or lettered in English. Exceptional interest to the
study of earthquakes. Custom fitted to the surface in the South
Pacific area, obscuring Hawaii and the central Pacific islands,
are larger plans for the vicinities of Panama and Colon (Manzanillo)
in Panama and then San Francisco, the mouth of the Columbia River,
Tacoma, Everett and Seattle in the State of Washington. Near title
lettering is a label in English explaining the locating of sites
of all recorded undersea and terrestrial eruptions. All other
surface designations are in German. Atypically mounted, not in the
usual earth axis but to aid study of the Southern hemisphere, on a
massive mahogany tressle stand with two turned columns and
stretchers, a brass compass mounted in the center of the cross
member. Moves on four casters beneath base. Lettered wooden half
meridian folds on hinges. Orb easily removes from stand by
releasing hook near the North Pole. Surface considerably
distressed requiring extensive restoration. Major land masses
largely intact as are the custom fitted addenda. Kiepert was the
foremost cartographer of the Guillaumine era. The present is a
high quality custom creation of huge original cost. An interesting
project for the advanced globe collector. Extraordinarily rare. I.D.#09022.
