IN THE ORIGINAL NAVAL DECK CASE;
AN AMAZING DISCOVERY
 George
Adams, Sr. "To His Most Sacred Majesty George the Third, This
New Celestial Globe containing all ye Southern Constellations
lately observed at the Cape of Good Hope, & all the Stars in
Flamsted's British Catalogue, is most humbly inscribed by His
Majesty's most dutiful & obliged Subject & Servant G. Adams."
Sold by G. Adams Mathl. Inst. Maker to ye King. Fleet Street
London." For the entire first half of the 18th Century,
seafaring Britain was absorbed with the problem of accurate
nautical navigation. To figure longitude correctly, a huge prize
was offered by Parliament for men like Harrison and Mudge to
compete for, building an accurate spring-driven nautical
timepiece for use at sea. The most significant maker in London
of ever more accurate scientific instruments was George Adams
Sr. and his sons George and Dudley. Holders of the appointment
Instrument Makers to the King, the Adams's made more than
elegant home globes on stylish stands. Scientific accuracy and
demonstrative value was uppermost and his globes were
comparatively more expensive than his competitors. It was Adams
Sr. who provided James Cook with the instruments needed to
observe the transit of Venus in the southern Pacific in 1769.[*
Dahl and Gauvin, Sphaerae Mundi (2000) p.87] Possibly he
supplied all the navigational instruments on the ship. In 1766,
Adams published a manual to accompany his globes. "A treatise
describing and explaining the construction and use of new
Celestial and Terrestrial Globes". In it he describes his new
method of mounting globes to make their navigational purpose
more easily understood. Jealous of his success and wealth, one
competitor Benjamin Martin attacked him in print describing the
new mount as "more difficult to use and much less adapted to
explain..." This globe is not dated on its surface but it is
dated. 1765 is burned into the wood of the inner surface of the
simple rough pine octagonal deck case. This case was originally
fitted with hinges and a lock, now broken or partially missing.
Fine wood boxes or mountings were a nuisance at sea so nautical
instrument makers who listened to the suggestions of seamen,
avoided them. The orb is carefully engraved on parchment colored
stock, mounted on a weighted plaster orb. A finely engraved full
ring meridian has the brass time dial at what we would call the
South Pole. Among the usual classical constellation figures are
also found representations of scientific instruments of the
time. These were not intended to entertain but to instruct
sailors in locating and identifying key stars in the firmament.
Before this, most could take navigation readings only at noon
and in sunlight. With a celestial globe (later called a
star-finder) the readings could be taken at night. Finding an
Adams star globe in its original nautical mounting is a major
discovery. George Adams Sr.. London. 1765. Literature: Elly

A WESTTOWN SCHOOL
NEEDLEWORK GLOBE
 American.
Westtown School. Anonymous Female Student. untitled.
[terrestrial globe]. The 2004 article by Judith A. Tyner is
excellent and is considered by Mary Brooks, archivist at
Westtown, to be the best introductory discussion of these
handmade globes. They may be considered the origin of individual
student classroom globe use in the United States. Governed by a
committee formed by the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Religious
Society of Friends, better known as Quakers, the school was
founded on land near West Chester. From the very beginning in
1799 parents were instructed to include scissors, thread-case,
thimble, work-bag and some plain sewing or knitting among the
clothing and things their daughters were to bring upon entering
the school. Often classed as folk art now, Quaker school
samplers and these globes had another more utilitarian purpose.
Quaker girls were not taught sewing as a ladylike
accomplishment. Quaker education was not esoteric but served
immediate practical purposes. Completely isolated from the
larger world by their beliefs, their archaic "plain" language
and dress, Quaker girls were expected to make and repair their
own clothes and often those of their brothers. In addition, the
'pursuasion' of Quaker theology existing in Philadelphia at the
turn of the Nineteenth Century was Wilburite. Espoused by a
'weighty' Friend, John Wilbur, his followers were intense
quietists and pietists. Wilburites vigorously opposed card
playing, lotteries, reading novels, playing music and most
fashionable pastimes or ladylike accomplishments. Art itself was
considered worldly and slightly immoral. The few with a real
gift for it, like Benjamin West, were felt possessed of a God
given talent that must be nurtured and respected. He was sent to
England to study painting. Any form of amateurism in art or
music was considered idle and worldly. It was a struggle between
utopianism and interacting with the larger world. So powerful
was the Wilburite influence that evangelical friend Joseph John
Gurney was told by the Meeting to leave Philadelphia (he went to
Ohio and became famous). Evangelicals, like the Hicks family
(Edward Hicks the artist and his cousin Elias Hicks the
preacher) created a schism among Philadelphia Quakers so severe
that it lasted until well into the Twentieth Century. One was
either an Orthodox Friend or a Hicksite Friend. The two would
not associate. Being an Orthodox Quaker boarding school,
Westtown was strictly controled by the Westtown School Committee
of the Yearly Meeting. This committee governed its Committee on
Instruction. At the founding in 1799, needlework and all the
other courses were based on those of an English Quaker school,
Ackworth in Yorkshire founded that same year. In Philadelphia
the Wilburite influence continued and lasted well into the
Twentieth Century. The first piano was given as a gift to the
school about 1920 and only those with "demonstrated training and
ability in the use of keyboard musical instruments" were given
access to it. In the late 1940's, the first television set
caused consternation when a lower school boy assembled one from
a kit he ordered by mail. Globes, unlike pianos or television
sets, were considered scientific instruments and worthy of close
study. A vignette on the cover of a leaflet the school publishes
as an introduction to their collection of historic Westtown
samplers shows a Quaker girl studying by candle with a large
table globe at her feet. While modern and perhaps a bit
romantic, this cut makes it apparent that the Westtown School
Committee or a generous donor gave the school a good English
table globe shortly after the school opened. Among Friends, as
they call themselves, there were several ship owners and
prosperous merchants who could have done so. Money was always an
issue. Westtown's records show that in 1824 the school was
obliged to order three new table globes, possibly Wilson's, at
considerable expense "as the old ones are much defaced".
American made globes were not available until after 1810 when
James Wilson began to make them by hand and his factory did not
open until 1815. Embroidered globes began out of necessity and
contined as an economy measure. Westtown globes all measure
between 4 to 6 inches. This one measures 5 inches. It is white
silk over linen on a wool core. This one was made to mount on a
spindle; many were not. Outlines of the continents were stitched
directly through the linen lining which was filled with wool in
a later step. The general outlines of continents are preserved
as are most of the smaller details which were added with ink.
This is fortunate, as spindle globes were handled with fingers;
the silk on this one is much distressed. To avoid handling, it
has been supplied with a Plexiglas display box. Judith Tyner
mentioned a letter written by Westtown student Rachel Cope to
her parents in October 1816 saying she was to start making
globes that would be useful in instructing her brothers and
herself but she expected to have "a great deal of trouble making
them". The Copes were a family of clipper ship owners so
geography and astronomy as used in navigation would be very
interesting to their children. It indicates also that a
celestial globe showing the stars was to be found at the school
at this early date. Later in the century an astronomy
observatory with telescope was constructed on the roof. Westtown
celestial globes are extremely rare (only 4 are recorded) and
date from after 1820. Westtown School, Pennsylvania. 1810

world. Westtown School's embroidered globes. In Piecework.

meridian. Professionally restored and relaquered. Geography
shows Alaska as "Russian Territory", North America colored green
with the UNITED STATES confined to eastern half. Texas stands
out as one of the few regions named, apparently in reference to
its status as a separate republic. Roughly located Vancouver and
Monterey. "Chinese Tartary", Australia is now Australia.
Geography indicative of the 1840's. Smith & Son were active at
this period, from 1803 to 1862, at no. 172 Corner of Surrey
Street Strand. They were engraver and map seller to H.R.H. the
Prince of Wales, but are usually represented by much larger
globes. This fine miniature is a rare item with handsome patina
and quite legible.

EXTRAORDINARY PAIR
FROM A MASONIC LODGE HALL. EXCEPTIONAL FOLK ART STANDS
 American
Moore & Nims. The Franklin Terrestrial Globe 10 inches in
diameter containing all the Geographical Divisions & Political
Boundaries to the present date carefully compiled from the best
authorities. Moore & Nims Troy N.Y. | The Franklin improved
Celestial Globe with the new Constellations. Merrian & Moore
Troy, N.Y. Pre-Civil War 10 inch globe pair from an old lodge
hall which accounts for their exceptional state of preservation.
Either side of the Worshipful Master's chair are two tall
columns which are usually topped with globes. Often these globes
are commonplace ones; this is not the case here. The terrestrial
globe shows "Russian America" for Alaska, thus dating them
pre-1867. Unusual West in the United States with Dacota
Territory and Idaho quite large including Wyoming. Tibet is
called "Bod", India called Hindostan, Afghanistan is called
"Cabool" and the Kenya region in Africa is "Zanguebar". The
celestial globe may be slightly earlier than the terrestrial but
they have always been together as a pair. Moore & Nims. Troy,
N.Y. c1858. Exceptional condition with original varnish.
Not a restoration. They always being high on columnar pedestals
meant that they were seldom handled. There is a small crack in
the south China area extending down into "Barmah" (Burma). It
rubs slightly within the full ring meridian at Hindostan. Also a
couple small dents on the title label. The hand coloring is
bright and sharp and the varnish is still shiney. The folk art
bases are noteworthy, being hand carved polychrome of a lotus
plant in green with white blossoms extending out. The bases are
a special design done by or for the Masons and not original to
the globes. Bases a bit dusty but fine folk art. Each base is 13
inches high and each globe stands about 25 inches. The leaves
and protruding flowers give a somewhat ancient Egyptian look and
extend out to 23 inches. A dramatic and decorative potential
newelpost statement. Unlike any other globe pair we have ever
encountered.

founded in 1858 and 1851, in the Saghalian Oula, a Russian
district just north of Manchuria. Gores copyrighted 1852. Stand

CIVIL WAR ERA SCHOOL MODEL WITH
EXTENDED MOUNTING
 American.
Perce's Magnetic Globe Pat. Mch. 15th 1864 for Elbert
Perce. Charles Scribner. New York. 1864. Hollow metal 7 inch orb
without time dial mounted on a meridian much larger than to
conform. Oceans finished in tan with land surfaces partly in tan
or green depending on their rainfall. With ecliptic and
analemma. Adjustable brass meridian atop turned walnut column
and turned dished base. Black spotted at equator and North Pole
possibly due to gore glue leaching through; stand varnish
flaked. Civil War period American globe. Alaska still shown as
Russian Territory (pre 1867). Three Californias: California
state overrides earlier "Upper California", and Baja is just
California without the Baja. Refurbished professionally as best
advisable. Perce globes came in three sizes, 5, 7 or 12 inch, on
either floor or table stands, ranging in price from six to
thirty-five dollars. As a teaching tool, it included tiny
magnetized figures of animals from gorillas to kangaroos; also
flags and lighthouses, of which we have seen nary a one. Though
adequately advertised, due probably to high cost, Perce globes
are rare today. To our knowledge, the only time Scribner's
attempted to market a globe.

RARE NEW YORK
GLOBEMAKER/FINE EXAMPLE
  J.W.
Schermerhorn & Co. untitled. Very detailed 5" table
globe. Engraved hand colored gores over plaster with probable
paper mache core. Oceans in natural tan with ecliptic, analemma,
many Pacific islands, detailed land masses with many place
names. Unusual turned wood column and base ebonized with sides
of base silvered and other wide points gilded. South pole
opening in orb slips over post on top of stand and fits snugly
in cup style holder. Continental United States shows no Gadsden
Treaty border, large territories of Nebraska, New Mexico, Dacota,
Utah, Oregon and Washington, but Alaska is (new) "U.S. Terr."
Hence date is 1867-8. Strangely, cities, such as Olympia, Santa
Fe, Austin, Macon and St. Paul are in larger type than their
states or territories. A few small surface stains but overall in
splendid condition. Fine example of a handsome small globe by
scarce globemaker in possibly unique custom stand. J.W.

with latest discoveries and oceanic currents. Charles W. Holbrook
[Holbrook School Apparatus Co.] Berea, Ohio. c1870. Quality orb
with coated paper gores over hollow metal sphere. Time scale at
North Pole printed on the gores rather than on a metal disc.
Surface finished in tan and light green with ecliptic, isothermal
lines, 'race track style' analemma in Pacific. Full mounting with
laminated wood horizon ring with fluited edges and finely engraved
scale with artistic zodiac figures. Raised on cast iron tripod
stand finished in black and gilt. While the mounting is American,
the globe and meridian may be British. Circular title gives no
place of manufacture and surface seems very similar to British
Bacon or Johnston globes of the period. Very high quality brass
full ring meridian. Descriptions of the Holbrook globes found in Ena L. Yonge, A catalogue of early globes (American Geographical
Society, 1968) is misprinted and should read 1873 rather than
1837. The descriptions also derive from the sources of the items
described rather than the dates of the geographic boundaries found
on the surfaces. Alaska cited 'to United States' (1867), Hawaii
still called Sandwich Islands. Dakota Territory still undivided
and Indian Territory shown rather than Oklahoma but other western
states have their present boundaries. Handsome little full mount
globe preserved within a black finished pine carrying case with
lock. Case needs key supplied and small repairs. Meridian ring
broken and repaired, some surface rubbing in southern hemisphere.

North Pole. Oceans and entire surface finished in tan with
portions showing original green coloring. Unusually handsome
American full-mount table globe showing in the Pacific the tropics

ring is supported by two cornucoepia, the feet below being winged
Assyrian style lions. We have never before encountered a globe
mounting such as this. Rae Smith is an unusual map engraver whose
only mention in Tooley's Dictionary of mapmakers is a map of
Montana done in 1865. Details in
North America include Alaska
Territory, Pacific R.R. from Omaha to San Francisco is the
only railroad shown (1869), "National Park" is Yellowstone (1873).

Van Diemen's Land and Alexandra Land (which explorer John
McDouall Stuart wanted to name Northern Territory, but it "was
never used" according to Stuart's historical site, except on
this globe). The only printed and colored portion of Antarctica
shown is "Land discovd. by Cpt. Wilkes of the U.S. ship
Vincennes". Fully mounted with horizon ring having engraved
paper with month and zodiac scale raised on cast iron conforming
ferules above a low tripod base embossed with floral motifs
ending in striking Celtic style feet. Metal surface of stand
with barely noticeable pitting; horizon ring with minor paper
loss. Strangely, exactly half of the globe surface has the
crackling appearance of an oil painting, which could be
attributable to two different kinds of paper used for the globe
gores. Some restoration. Similar to but not completely uniform
with the celestial globe I.D.#09953. Rare small size. Handsome
appearance with unusual Celtic style base.

Hawaii still spelled Owyhee. Shows Pto. Rico in Caribbean. Rises from a turned basswood stand that resembles a large chess piece. Height 6.5". RARE MERWIN, ST.
LOUIS GLOBE/INDIAN WARS PERIOD WEST
 American.
The J.B. Merwin School Supply Co. New Eight Inch Globe.
J.B. Merwin School Supply Co.. St. Louis, Mo. c1880. Dull
finished gores over metal, time dial pointer attached to
meridian. Oceans finished in dark green with equator and
ecliptic but no international date line. Shows ocean currents
and isothermal lines. "Race track" style analemma. Brass
full ring meridian raised on turned column and round base
fashioned from walnut and basswood to give a two-tone effect.
Dakota not divided, Yellowstone Park not shown, Indian Territory
without mention of Oklahoma, Texas shows its present borders.
Title label inset into surface and not just pasted on, leaving a
large gap in the gore below Alaska. The avocado green color and
emphasis on physical features invites speculation that the gores
and orb are British, either Bacon or Johnston globes of the
period. Some restoration to column, otherwise a handsome example
of a rare American globemaker's handiwork.

temperatures of the State of Washington. Dull paper gores over
hollow two piece steel orb, 77 cm. in diameter. Oceans finished in

found on large globes. In addition there has been added in

of earthquakes. Custom fitted to the surface in the South Pacific
area, obscuring Hawaii and the central Pacific islands, are larger
plans for the vicinities of Panama and Colon (Manzanillo) in
Panama and
then San Francisco, the mouth of the Columbia River,
Tacoma, Everett and Seattle in the State of Washington. Near title
lettering is a label in English explaining the locating of sites
of all recorded undersea and terrestrial eruptions. All other
surface designations are in German. Atypically mounted, not in the
usual earth axis but to aid study of the Southern hemisphere, on a
massive mahogany trestle stand with two turned columns and
stretchers, a brass compass mounted in the center of the cross
member. Moves on four casters beneath base. Lettered wooden half
meridian folds on hinges. Orb easily removes from stand by
