Boulton's masterpiece, for which he is remembered. First state,
plates restruck in 1793. While many mapmakers were tempted to add
fictitious topography and natives to blank spaces being the
 unexplored areas on maps they were making, Boulton refrained and
added this advertisement. "The inland parts of Africa being but
very little known and the names of the regions and countries which
fill that vast tract of land being for the greatest part placed by
conjecture it may be judged how absurd are the divisions traced in
some maps and why they are not followed in this." The sum total of
gazetteer information available to a scientific minded
cartographer is provided in closely engraved insets. Lower left is
a large detailed inset map of the Gold Coast with comments on its
peoples. Main title upper right within a large cartouche of a
negro family, the figures being nearly five inches high. The best
representation of the continent at the end of the 18th century and
the height of the slave trade. Slight margin stains, else
