HANDSOME SPEED COUNTY MAP

HONDIUS, JODOCUS/JOHN SPEED. WILSHIRE. JOHN SUDBURY AND G. HUMBLE. LONDON. 1611 - 1627. OUTLINE HAND COLOR. COPPER ENGRAVING. Wilshire from an early edition of Speed's Theatre of empire Great Britain. John Speed (1552-1629) a famed English cartographer, is noted for his county maps of England and Wales. With fourteen coats of arms of local gentry, among them Robert Cecill, and a town plan of Salesbvry (Salisbury). The Cecil family of Hatfield house became the Marquises of Salisbury. Also, upper right, a view of ancient Stonehenge showing five contemporary tourists and a dog. Strong impression with early color. Slight separation at lower fold but a fine example. 15"H. x 20"W.
