TEXAS PACIFIC
RAILROAD REACHES FORT WORTH
PHILIP, GEORGE &
SON. UNITED STATES. GEORGE PHILIP & SON. LONDON/LIVERPOOL.
c1881. FULL PRINTED COLOR. LITHOGRAPHY. (Philip's new series of Sixpenny maps)
Interesting Victorian map of the country especially the West. At
this moment in time, the Texas Pacific Railroad reached only to
Fort Worth. Its western counterpart from Los Angeles was completed
to "Paso del Norte." New Mexico is described as "uninhabited"
south of "copper and gold mines." Proposed railroad from Vinitas,
Indian Territory (OK) to San Diego, Denver, Rio Grange appears
completed. The Union Pacific has spur lines to Manti and Frisco in
Utah, the Northern Pacific Railroad comes to Ft. Sarpy in Eastern
Montana. Excellent delineation of topography including the often
noted but imprecisely located "Great American Desert" held over
from early maps. Hundreds of western placenames, Indian tribes
such as the Comanches, Navahoes, Unkapas, Zuni, Sioux, Blackfoots,
etc., forts such as Bent's, Phantomhill, Pike, Defiance, Laramie,
Colville many shown on pre-Civil War maps, camps, mines, springs
and roaring rapids on the Colorado River. It does not show
Birmingham in Alabama. For a popularly priced map sold in London
at this late period it shows a rather antique view of the United
States. Lack of up-to-date information on the country often led to
financial disaster for British investors buying American bonds and
shares. Printed paper guard present on one reverse panel. Cloth
cover lacking. 19.75"H. x 24"W. GOOD. $500.00. I.D.#20330.
