EXTRAORDINARY RR LAND PROMO WALL MAP OF NORTHERN US & CANADA

MAP OF THE NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD AND TRIBUTARY COUNTRY. NATIONAL RAILWAY PUBLICATION COUNTRY. PHILADELPHIA. 1872. FULL PRINTED COLOR. LITHOGRAPHY. Covers the northern two thirds of the United States and all of Canada with an inset map of the Arctic regions and ocean currents. A wide column of large-print text extols the mild climate to be found along the route from Minnesota westward and similar exaggerations. Published by Jay Cooke to promote his speculations, it was used by salesmen selling land claims to the gullible. A major depression was brought about by the panic that ensued a little over a year after this map was published. This is a wall map of much interest. Towns and forts are shown, especially mining boom towns in the Montana Territory. Bogus climate claims abound. It was, according to the promoters, possible to raise wheat north even to the shores of Hudson's Bay. The Rockies are shown as isolated ranges and the immense mountains of British Columbia are described only as "elevated country". "Open poplar woods and fertile soil" are to be found on what is actually tundra and, it was claimed, that the Dakotas have an annual rainfall of 75 inches. A map intended to humbug the unwary rather than to enlighten. Rods lacking, small repair to upper left corner. Deacidified; enclosed on foamcore. Rare & important. 21.25"H. x 32.8"W. GOOD. $3,000.00. TEXAS PACIFIC RAILROAD REACHES FORT WORTH

UNITED STATES. GEORGE PHILIP & SON. LONDON./LIVERPOOL. c1881. FULL PRINTED COLOR. LITHOGRAPHY. (Philip's new series of Sixpenny maps) Interesting Victorian map of the country especially the West. At this moment in time, the Texas Pacific Railroad reached only to Fort Worth. Its western counterpart from Los Angeles was completed to "Paso del Norte." New Mexico is described as "uninhabited" south of "copper and gold mines." Proposed railroad from Vinitas, Indian Territory (OK) to San Diego, Denver, Rio Grande appears completed. The Union Pacific has spur lines to Manti and Frisco in Utah, the Northern Pacific Railroad comes to Ft. Sarpy in Eastern Montana. Excellent delineation of topography including the often noted but imprecisely located "Great American Desert" held over from early maps. Hundreds of western placenames, Indian tribes such as the Comanches, Navahoes, Unkapas, Zuni, Sioux, Blackfoots, etc., forts such as Bent's, Phantomhill, Pike, Defiance, Laramie, Colville many shown on pre-Civil War maps, camps, mines, springs and roaring rapids on the Colorado River. It does not show Birmingham in Alabama. For a popularly priced map sold in London at this late period it shows a rather antique view of the United States. Lack of up-to-date information on the country often led to financial disaster for British investors buying American bonds and shares. Printed paper guard present on one reverse panel. Cloth cover lacking. 19.75"H. x 24"W. GOOD. $500.00. I.D.#20330.

DONALDSON, THOMAS. MAP OF THE UNITED STATES EXHIBITING THE GRANTS OF LANDS MADE BY THE GENERAL GOVERNMENT TO AID IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF RAILROADS AND WAGON ROADS TO JUNE 30, 1883. THE HELIOTYPE PRINTING CO. BOSTON. 1883. SEPIA ON BLACK AND WHITE. LITHOGRAPHY. [The base chart was engraved for the Ninth Census of the U.S.] To accompany Public Domain, by Thomas Donaldson. A controversial map that was copied on a bitter Democratic Party election poster in 1884 claiming "give away" of the public lands to special interests. Unfortunately for the Democrats, they neglected to cite the original source of their reprint and were blamed for the distortion. The grants on this map show areas of about 20% of the country; only 8% was closer to the mark. Both Stewart Holbrook's 'Story of American Railroads' and Oliver Jensen's 'The American Heritage history of railroads in America' (where the distortions are discussed on pp. 118-119) seem unaware of the original source. Extensive tape repairs. Very important U.S. RR map. 19.5"H. x 28.3"W. FAIR. $350.00. I.D.#08002.
