MELISH
MASTERPIECE. THE FIRST WALL MAP TO SHOW
THE
FULL EAST-WEST EXTENT OF THE UNITED STATES
MELISH,
JOHN. MAP OF THE UNITED STATES WITH CONTIGUOUS BRITISH & SPANISH
POSSESSIONS. JOHN MELISH. PHILADELPHIA. c.1820, June 16 corrected to
1822. OUTLINE HAND COLOR. COPPER ENGRAVING. "compiled from the
latest & best authorities by John Melish. Engraved by J. Vallance
and [H.S.] Tanner... corrected to 1822" Walter Ristow couldn't
heap enough praise on to this map. He considered it 'a significant
milestone in the history of American commercial cartography.' As
for Melish himself and his relative importance he said: 'It
remained for John Melish (1771-1822) to [be the first to] devote
exclusive attention to publishing geographical and cartographical
products. Melish played a foremost role in bringing together from
many and varied sources the geographical and cartographical
knowledge of the period, and presenting it
systematically and
graphically for the edification and enlightenment of the citizens
of the young republic.' Scottish born and university educated, Melish was a textile manufacturer ruined by events that lead to
the War of 1812. He relocated to the United States in 1811.
Sometime between June and November 1816 he published the first of
nearly twenty states of his wall map, the earlier in six sheets.
It was very successful. Three editions of a guide book to the map,
'A Geographical Description', appeared before 1818. In it was
said, "editions of moderate size, only, are prepared, so as to
afford frequent opportunities of bringing forward new matter." Not
said was that this served to preserve the copper plates from
excessive wear prolonging their life. Travel accounts of Zebulon
Pike, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and William Darby, who
surveyed parts of Texas, were used as soon as they appeared. The
most important of the map issues was June 1820 which had three
more sheets added at the bottom expanding it to include all of
Mexico and the West Indies. What had been previously only in an
inset is now shown in full. This shows, in that the register
between the new sheets and the old in certain areas is not
perfect. Later issues of the map greatly improved the descriptions
of the interior of Texas and it was the official map of the Adams-Onis
Treaty. The present example is one of the two issues corrected to
1822. Precisely which has not yet been determined. Melish died in
1822 and his plates were then used by James Finlayson to bring out
a new state with himself as publisher in 1823. This great wall map
was among the first to show the United States stretching from
Atlantic to Pacific fulfilling its "Manifest Destiny" role in the
eyes of viewers. Professionally restored and laid down on new
canvas. Portions along both outer margins gone and filled, not
greatly affecting the image. Somewhat browned but in good
condition for a wall map version not dissected to be a pocket or
case one. Op cit. W.W. Ristow. American maps and mapmakers. 1985.

LEWIS ROBINSON WALL MAP OF THE COUNTRY. AKRON, OHIO 1838 UPDATED
BEST EDITION
 ROBINSON,
LEWIS. MAP OF THE UNITED STATES Compiled from the latest
authorities. Published by Lewis Robinson & Co. ... LEWIS
ROBINSON & CO. AKRON, OHIO. 1838. PART HAND COLOR. STEEL
ENGRAVING. Engraved by J.G. Darby Four sheet wall map on rods,
carefully steel engraved, and hand outlined color. There are
seven vicinity insets, Cincinnati, Albany, Philadelphia,
Niagara, Boston, south Florida and Baltimore/Washington. Also a
Statistical Table below title. The portion of Texas shown shows
John Camerron's Grant, Felisola's Grant, Burnett's Grant,
Vheling's Grant, Zavalla's Grant and Austin's Colony. Robinson
was a prolific but highly ephemeral wall map publisher to whom
Walter W. Ristow devoted two and a half pages (pp.271-73) He can
be credited with being the first to emphasize regional and state
maps and to distribute them in unorthodox ways, itinerant
peddlars by horse and wagon. He evidently kept meticulous
records for he is credited with selling these peddlers 6,774
maps. After soliciting reports of Robinson holdings from fifty
libraries and collections, only 65 various examples were located
in 1962. Dalphin and McCorison in their article "Lewis
Robinson-Entrepreneur" provided a bibliography of known maps
bearing his imprint. The large United States map first appeared
in 1833 for $3; this 1838 edition is a much more finished and
elegant production. Extra fine wove plate stock was used in this
edition. Robinson engraved his own state maps but hired J.G.
Darby to steel engrave the national ones. He created the
attractive cartouche with an eagle in clouds at its top above
elegant graphics. While Ristow says his coloring was
unattractive, in this case it was done with care and is quite
tasteful. Robinson did not copyright his maps so many issues are
not in the Library of Congress collections. His U.S. maps are
not in Philips. "As a result," Ristow said, "the number of
extant copies of Robinson maps is shamefully small. ... Little
remains to bear evidence of the extraordinary energy of Lewis
Robinson, entrepreneur..." Professionally restored. 38.5"H. x
47.5"W. VERY GOOD. $10,000.00. I.D.#24986.
