portraits of the Presidents up top John Tyler, and a key to the
large illustration below of the Declaration of Independence.
Next to the portraits are side panels within are oval portraits
of Indian chief King Philip 1676 (on left) and George Washington
(on right). Four other views are of the Landing of the Pilgrims,
battles of Lexington and Bunker Hill, and Washington's Farewell
to his Army. The map itself extends from East coast to Rocky
Mountains showing "Great American Desert",to Missouri Territory
down to the eastward indentation of Mexico (taking in the Texas
panhandle) which is above a Strawberry-shaped Republic of Texas,
containing fifty-six placenames: Cherokee Village, Salt Spring,
Copper Mine, Tivis [sic], Trinity, Franklin, Whaco Indians,
Colorado City, Ft. del Altar, Gonsoles, Teran, Belgrade, along
with many current names. Lower right are fifteen inset city
areas. Major roads and trails such as Santa Fe, San Antonio,

sheets, linen-backed, hand-colored by county and shellacked.
Attractive patina with some crazing of the shellac appearing as
small, vertical cracks. Engraved by Dolittle & Mnson. Splendidly
decorative with portraits of eleven U.S. presidents: Washington
through Polk. Interspersed by state seals and birdseye views of
what were considered "western" cities: St. Louis, Louisville,
New Orleans, Cincinnati, Nashville (two fishermen in foreground,
river bridge and city in distance), and Pittsburgh. Vignette
above title: "Landing & Settlement of Jamestown, 1607". Insets
include: Oregon (ter.) With 7 forts and 3 "sta."tions: Pondera,
Nez Perces and Methodist; Florida (peninsula) with few
placenames (Volusia, New Smyrnia, Ft. Brooke, Ft. Poinsett, and
Key West). Large Wisconsin, Iowa and Indian Territories. The
latter extends from Texas to Canada, naming location and

Texas, Oregon and California, usually encountered as a Mitchell
pocket map or in Mitchell's Guide to California, 1849. This wall

OUTLINE HAND COLOR. LITHOGRAPHY. Shows pre-Gadsden U.S. with unusual territory boundaries
and excellent detail of native tribes. Eight tribes are named in
what would come to be Arizona above the Gila River including Tejuas, Cosninas, Schemejuabas, etc. Therre are 11 place names
along the Rio del Norte in New Mexico. There are over 50 place
names in Texas including 3 Houstons! One was Ft. Houston and
another was south near the Rio Grande. There are towns called
Dangerfield, Coffee's Trad. Ho., Robins Ferry and Alamo. In the
Southeast are shown extent of railroads and unusual detail of
placenames, tiny places such as Cadiz, Ky. Barreville, Tn. Forts
Gaines, Scott, & Nicholas in Ga. Forts Deposit, Hampton, Armstrong
& Jackson in Ala. Strange small forms (lakes?) in Florida: Micco,
Rollstoun, Chipola and Sanybell I. Rather browned and foxed.

OUTLINE HAND COLOR. COPPER ENGRAVING. Outline colored road and
railroad map of the United States extending west to Texas and
Indian Territory. Insets are of above-average interest being a
map of the Copper Mine Region (along Lake Superior), map of the
Maritime and Overland Routes to California, map of the Gold and
Quicksilver district of California, along with vicinity of
Niagara Falls and of New England then termed the Eastern States.
Map folds into maroon roan covers along with a 124 page 16mo
book: Mitchell's New Traveller's guide through the United States
and the Canadas... also published by Desilver in 1855. The
cover, decorated by a gilt plate cut shows a train, a horse
drawn rail coach crossing a bridge and a steamboat. Map, covers
and book professionally restored and rebacked. Slight fold
browning on map. Most Mitchell traveller's guide maps were
engraved by J.H. Young. Those engraved by Drake are done with
greater care, are scarce and more artistic. 21.3"H. x 28"W.

FULL HAND COLOR. STEEL ENGRAVING. Martin and Martin 43 (1854 issue); Wheat 747, 799. One of
the most widely disseminated and influential maps of the country
of its time. Fascinating view of the West just after the Gadsden
Purchase and the Kansas-Nebraska Act which established the
northern border of Kansas. Arizona not yet shown, called
"uninhabited," large Utah Territory, a large Northwest Territory
includes Dakotas and Montana and Wyoming. Colorado part of
Nebraska Territory where a note states that all civilized tribes
of Indians now appoint a principal Chief who conducts their
negotiations with the government. Also railroads, emigrant's
trails, towns, forts, and topography. This wall map is noted for
the many small steel engraved vignettes of native American animals
and ships that adorn its surface. Some moisture damage to surface.
Later margin binding. Some flaking, cracking and loose spots.
Original rods. There was also a folding state. The 1851 version of
this map established the present borders of Texas and the various
issues responded to the demand for reliable data on the emerging
