MOORE, BART... THIS PLAN OF
NEW YORK CITY AND ITS ENVIRONS...
IS MOST HUMBLY DEDICATED. PLAN OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK IN NORTH
AMERICA SURVEYED IN THE YEARS 1766 & 1767.
J.H. COLTON. NEW YORK. 1853. LITHOGRAPHY. Wall map in the
dissected and folding state, laid down on linen and guarded.
Reprinted from Ratzer's 1776 New York City plan by Colton &
Perris and printed and lithographed by Schedler & Liebler, later
better known for globes. This edition is very much larger than
the originals and omits the view of the city at the bottom. Folds
into a brown pebbled cloth folding cover with Ratzer's name
misspelled "Ratza." The lithography is so skillful that it has
been mistaken for copperplate. The mislettered cloth cover is
rare. A reprint vastly scarcer than either of the originals.
Bernard Ratzer or Ratzen was a lieutenant in the 60th Royal
American Regiment and is known for his excellent maps of several
regions from the French & Indian War and the early Revolution.
His originals are very costly today. (Stokes v.I, p.341; Haskell
334, Augustyn & Cohen p.73.) Professionally cleaned and
remounted. Outer case rebacked with new ribbon ties and
lining. Not in any map price guide in this format. Superb display
example of rare NYC plan. 40.25”H. x 35.5”W. VERY GOOD. I.D.#20467.

SCARCE CAPTAIN'S CHART OF W. LONG
ISLAND & NYC
  HASSLER, F. R./E.
BLUNT/J. FERGUSON/C. M. EAKIN, ET AL. LONG ISLAND SOUND
(WESTERN SHEET)/CONTINUATION TO
NEW YORK.
UNITED STATES COAST & GEODETIC SURVEY. D.C.
JUNE 1878/PRINTED OCT.26 1889. LITHOGRAPHY. Large and extremely
detailed captain's rolled chart of western Long Island Sound with
inset of New York City area showing coastal soundings, inland topography, lighthouses, buoys, roads, railroads, streets and
every building along the way. Immense amount of triangulation,
topographic and hydrologic work went into the preparation of this
definitive chart. Twenty officer credited in title include famous
cartographic names such as Pruess and Blunt. four engravers are
credited: S. Siebert, J. Knight, A. Rolle & G. McCoy. Greenwich
displays a cluster of perhaps a dozen buildings and fields along a
country road. Inset of NYC area shows every building up to the
more developed blocks in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Covers CT coast
to east of Stratford and Long Island to east of Mt. Sinai
Harbor. Best available description of much of this area for that era.
Strangely, the two hand stamps on the bottom margin: "PRINTED
OCT.
26 1889" and "CORRECTED TO NOV. 9 1889" seem out of normal
sequence, unless the corrections were done by hand after printing.
There are some manuscript additions. Uniform light browning
to chart surface, else very good for a working captain's chart.
Definitely a museum piece. 24.5"H. x 35"W. VERY GOOD.
