KINO, EUSEBIO FRANCISO (1644-1711)/J. GIBSON, sculp. AN ACCURATE MAP OF CALIFORNIA, Drawn By The Society Of Jesuits, & Dedicated To The King Of Spain. 1757. LONDON. 1757. COPPER ENGRAVING. Book illustration version of the Kino map which defined the actual shape of California and ended belief that it was an island. Show Baja California as a peninsula plus the mainland Mexican provinces of Pimeria, Sonora and Cinaloa. Details missions at the southern tip at Cap St. Lucas, forts, water holes, "hidden water," "unknown tribe of infidels," volcanoes discovered in 1746 and other details. First state with the northern boundary extending to 54 Degrees, 40 Minutes. The Manifest Destiny boundary claimed since 1824 nearly provoked a war with England that was successfully arbitrated by the Treaty of 1846.
