ELLICOTT, ANDREW. PLAN OF THE CITY OF WASHINGTON IN THE TERRITORY OF COLUMBIA. THACKARA & VALLANCE. PHILADELPHIA. 1792. COPPER ENGRAVING. "ceded by the States of Virginia and Maryland to the United States of America and by them established as the seat of their government, after the year MDCCC." Late restrike from the original plate on Whatman Turkey Mill paper watermarked 1848. Professionally restored and laid down on Okiwara japan paper on reverse. Old restrike of this seminal plan of Washington, D.C. by L'Enfant engraved by Andrew Ellicott. Ellicott began life as a clockmaker and died at West Point teaching mathematics. Shows the Carolinas and Virginia and his dramatic view of Niagara Falls and the detailed plan of the District of Columbia, among the earliest such plans to appear on a foreign map. Doc.653) Exact photolithographic facsimile of the second official plan of the Nation's capital. Based on that of the Ellicotts, Freeman, Ralston and Nicholas King, Dermott's plan was commissioned "for the purpose of connecting the channels of the Potomac and the eastern branch with the squares in the city." It shows the city in its present form for the first time. Two sheets joined. Top sheet lightly browned. Authorized for reproduction in 1888 with no additions or omissions from the original.
