LE BARON, J. FRANCIS. MAP OF
THE CITY OF
JACKSONVILLE AND SUBURBS,
Duval County, Florida... 1885. from actual surveys and official
records by J. Francis Le Baron, C.E. deputy U.S. Surveyor...
Published and for sale by J. Francis Le Baron, Room 3, Bostwick's
Bldg., Jacksonville. Am. Photo-Litho, N.Y. J.F. LE BARON.
JACKSONVILLE. 1885, MARCH 17. PART HAND COLOR. LITHOGRAPHY.
Monumental city plan entirely colored by hand, the work of a
surveyor known to Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers only for two
maps of Honduras done in 1886 and 1888.
Folds into green octavo size cloth covers where inside the front
is a printed advertising label outlining an extensive career as an
engineer in New England. On moving to Florida
he said he published three maps in 1885, this one, another of
Brevard County and two sizes or editions for
Duval County. They were available as
wall maps on fabric with rods, folding into covers like this, or
plain. On this copy, Le Baron has added and numbered in black and
red inks, the city wards, perhaps intending to publish an up-dated
edition. The advertising also speaks of an extensive engineering
library in his office. On the outside back cover is pasted his
personal library bookplate, in two-color art nouveau style with a
quotation from English writer John Lyly. This very rare map is
said to have come from the personal papers of English world
traveler and author Raphael Pumpelly, recently dispersed by a
grandson. Professionally restored and refolded, fold tears
repaired. Some stains. 44”H. x 60”W. GOOD. I.D.#22944.
