Three maps on same sheet, that to the left shows northwest South America, lower right a small map of Guestecan depicting the Gulf coast of Mexico. Upper right is the foundation map of Florida, the South and Texas and is the first printed map of the American South East, based on reports of the Spaniard Geronimo de Chaves as well as information derived from De Soto's expedition to the region 1539-42. MORDEN, ROBERT. "A MAP OF FLORIDA AND YE GREAT LAKES OF CANADA BY ROBT. MORDEN". LONDON. c1700. OUTLINE HAND COLOR. COPPER ENGRAVING. Leaf Ffff2 [p.587] from an edition of his Atlas terrestris (1695). Very rare colonial map of eastern North America with the colonies and settlements names along the coast. "Florida" included the entire southeast as it is known now. Accompanying text claims "whose natives live to the age of two hundred and fifty years." Modern coloring. 5.1"H. x 5"W. VERY GOOD. $750.00. Lower right section taken from his four-part map DOMINIA ANGLORUM IN AMERICA SEPTENTIONALI, four regional maps based on those of Herman Moll. The Carolina map contains new information related to Ebenezer and the Urlsperger Tracts ("Col(ony) of the Salzb(bergers)"). Details coast from "James T(own).(VA) past "Fort St. Augustin(to Spain)" to "The south Bounds of Carolina according to the last Charter". Much detail of mountains, rivers, roads/trails, Indians (at headwaters of "Savana R." are "Charakeys 10 Villages"), forts ("Johnsons Fort (at) Charles Town"; "Old F(ort)." at mouth of "Apalaxy R."; Fort An-gile" (Argyl?); Charles Town referred to as "The Improved Part of Carolina or The English Settlements". Extends north to the Great Lakes and Canada it shows the Gulf Coast and Florida. Good detail of the Rio Grande, central Texas with Indian tribes, forts and rivers. Excellent view of the Mississippi River Valley with French forts on the Missouri and Ohio Rivers. Includes Fort Prudhomme in what is now Lauderdale County, Tennessee. A famous map based largely on LaSalle but giving credit to Father Antoine Hennepin (1640-1701), a Belgian Franciscan missionary who explored the upper Mississippi and was captured and lived for a time among the Sioux. He was first to describe Niagara Falls and there is a vignette view below the title cartouche. The so-called Buffalo Map for its view of that beast (actually a European bison) with an Indian family lower right. Enhanced old color. Lit. Covers the area from lower Baja through Texas (area "Little Known", entire Gulf Coast, mouth of the Mississipi or St. Louis (River)", much Florida detail including "Spanish Fort built 1719", Fort Diego (& British St. George's fort above), St. Augustine, "Southerrn Bounds by charter 1665", southern third of peninsula broken up into islands, C. Biscayne. Detail of all Bahamas, Great Antilles and Caribbean Islands. Includes a 8 x 8" inset "The passage by land to California" by Fr. Kino. that shows Baja and Sea of California with excellent detail of southern Arizona (Pimeria) Sonora Mexico to Cinaolia (sic). Three settlements/missions above St. Francis Xavier du Bac are shown: St. Cosime and St. Augustin near modern Tucson. Detailed map showing few northern counties separately colored, towns, townships, roads, topography, etc. Ten named counties: (W. TO E.) Escambia, Walton, Jackson, Washington, (Unnamed Co.), Leon, Jefferson, Madison, Duval, Nassau (Between St. Mary' and Nassau Rivers), and St. John's which takes up the entire peninsula. One circle for unnamed settlement near Espiritu Santo (Tampa) Bay is only place marked below L(ake) Eustes. Top tier of counties is criss-crossed with trails connecting places such as Belle Fontaine, Florida, Pensacola, Aligna, Holmes Valley Fow T(own)., Chipola, Old Fort Vernon, Tallehassee, St. Marks, Octoke, S. Pedro, St. Francis, Allachos, Micanopy, Jacksonville and St. Augustine.
