EARLIEST
OBTAINABLE ENGLISH LANGUAGE FILSON MAP OF KENTUCKY
FILSON, JOHN. A
MAP OF KENTUCKY DRAWN FROM ACTUAL OBSERVATIONS... STOCKDALE,
J. LONDON. 1793. ENGRAVING. This famous map was first published in
Wilmington in 1784, of which nine states have been identified.
Our example is the first derivative, very similar to the
Wilmington edition but with minor alterations and an added inset,
"A Plan of the Rapids in the River Ohio." The state is shown
divided into the counties of Lafayette, Lincoln and Jefferson and
numerous settlements are located and named. The roads between the
principal towns are shown by means of dotted lines, plus the
following "Path of Cumberland Settlement, The Road from the Old
Settlements in Virginia to Kentucky thro' the great Wilderness, Genl. Clark's War Road going, Birds War Road, &c." Kentucky was
admitted as a State in 1792. An early rare and interesting map on
a scale of ten miles to the inch. Part of the lower margin
trimmed, transferral; professionally backed with japan paper,
minor tears repaired, else, sharp impression. Very good example
19.3”H. x 17.8”W. VERY GOOD. $12,500.00. I.D.#11031.

RARE ELIHU BARKER MAP OF KENTUCKY
  BARKER, ELIHU/T.
CONDER. A MAP OF THE STATE OF KENTUCKY,. J. DEBRETT.
LONDON. 1797. COPPER ENGRAVING. "from actual survey by Elihu Barker of
Philadelphia." Phillips p.350. Engraved for Imlay's American
Topography... Thomas D. Clark, 'Historic maps of Kentucky' 1979,
pp.68-70. A map of great importance, of which Clark wrote, "Elihu
Barker's map of Kentucky is the most important one produced in the
eighteenth century, John Filson's notwithstanding." He went on to
explain, "It was prepared sometime before 1793, possibly early in
1792, and presents the new state at the time of its admission to
the Union. Without the distortions that characterize the Filson map, it gives a
sense of the settlement patterns and conveys with almost
unbelievable accuracy the physiographic features of the state,
especially the myriad ganglia of the commonwealth stream system."
Later he mentions, "the Barker map was reproduced by the engraver
J. Conder for J. Debrett's third edition of Gilbert Imlay, 'A
topographical description of the Western Territory of North
America' (London, 1797). The only discernible differences between
the American and English edition were the measurement of longitude
west from
London rather than Philadelphia, and the use of a
fleur-de-lis on the compass rose." "... the map demonstrates that
in some way he assembled a remarkable body of factual information
about the physiographic features of Kentucky. Indicative of the
fact that the map was prepared in 1792 or earlier is that it shows
only nine counties; those of Scott, Shelby, Washington, Clark,
Logan, and Hardin, not shown on the map, were created in that
year. Barker located twelve towns and villages along with numerous
forts and frontier stations, and he located several projected but
unbuilt towns... The cartographer also located numerous other
places that long ago disappeared from the Kentucky map or have
undergone name changes... Six early Kentucky roads are drawn on
the map, but none west of the Louisville-Bardstown axis... For
nearly a century the Barker map had a bearing on the works of
other map-makers... Historically,... one of its most important
contributions was that for the first time a cartographer presented
the State of Kentucky within its physical boundaries. Barker did
this with uncanny accuracy." Copies of this map are often not
found intact since it was taken from an octavo size book into
which it had been folded. Consequently the subtitle at the top and
the imprint at bottom are trimmed away. Left margin trimmed to
neat line. As copies of the book are quite expensive, the map
itself seldom comes on to the market. Enough remains here to
identify it however, including T. Conder's name lower right.
