AMSTERDAM 1730 EDITION OF DELISLE'S LANDMARK "CARTE DE LA LOUISIANE ET DU COURS DU MISSISSIPI"

DE L'ISLE, GUILLAUME (1675-1726). CARTE DE LA LOUISIANE ET DU COURS DU MISSISSIPI Dressee sur un grand nombre de memoires entr'autres sur ceux de Mr. de Maire par Guillme. de l'Isle de l'Academie Rle. des Sciences. I. COVENS ET C. MORTIER. AMSTERDAM. 1730. OUTLINE HAND COLOR. COPPER ENGRAVING. op.cit. Martin & Martin, pl.19, p.98-99. A later but improved version of the same map first published in 1718. The Martins', father and son, stated that "It was only through the maps of Delisle,..., that Texas began to take shape recognizable to the modern eye." The first issue of 1718 they felt to be "his most important achievement for North American cartography". Delisle died in 1726 and Covens and Mortier and other map publishers began to issue copies or adaptations. The Martins' went on to say that "because of its accurate information on the Mississippi and its tributaries, this map served throughout the eighteenth century as the prototype for most subsequent renderings of that great river. Interesting and accurate depiction of the course of the Mississippi but rather fanciful in other areas. Accurately shows the river systems and trails of Texas. Names and dates the routes of the major French explorers there. Short notes give the history of these explorations. But Florida is practically divided by the mythical Bay of the Holy Spirit (the Everglades?). Delisle was also the first to insert nationalistic claims into his maps; Florida is claimed for France rather than Spain. This created a flurry of competing map claims for the next sixty or so years. Of particular importance is the inset map of the mouth of the Mississippi, a confusing area that had caused LaSalle to miss it and land in Texas. This specimen is a nice one only slightly waterstained along the top margin and a few pen holes. Sharp, early impression with handsome original outline color. 17.25"H. x 23.75"W. VERY GOOD. $4,000.00. I.D.#28319. (Have more photos if needed) **New Addition** November 2008

RARE CIVIL WAR BROADSIDE MAP OF LOWER MISSISSIPPI RIVER WITH FORTS AND BIRDSEYE VIEWS OF ST. LOUIS, MEMPHIS, VICKSBURG AND NEW ORLEANS

MAGNUS, CHARLES. PANORAMA OF THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY AND ITS FORTIFICATIONS. C. MAGNUS, 12 FRANKFORT STREET. NEW YORK. c1863. SEPIA AND BLUE.LITHOGRAPHY. Stephenson 42.5. Four vertical strip maps from St. Louis to the Gulf each with a vignette printed in blue. The Magnus issue is more attractive than either the James T. Lloyd or that of his competitor H.H. Lloyd. Stephenson states it was engraved by F.W. Boell although this is not stated on the surface. He also gives a scale which is also not present. On fragile paper it is seldom seen. Shows two tables of distances and the four vignettes which are St. Louis, Memphis, Vicksburg and New Orleans. Extraordinary detail of roads, railroads, towns, villages, forts, churches, saw mills, occasional landowner or plantation names, steamboat provisioning and wooding stops, court houses, and individual stores (e.g. in our neck of the woods, Lauderdale County, Tennessee, "Hales Store" is depicted as a single building, parts of which still existed eighty years later). This fact leads to speculation that an artist came down, or up, the river before The War sketching settlements as small as Hales Store and as large as New Orleans. This map is definitive of the way the lower Mississippi River looked physically, militarily, and politically during the Civil War. Original hand coloring. Amazingly good condition for such a fragile broadside. 23.5"H. x 25.25"W. VERY GOOD. $2,500.00. I.D.#28813.  (Have many more photos if needed)
