ATWOOD, J.M. MAP OF THE WESTERN STATES. THAYER, BRIDGMAN & FANNING. NEW YORK. 1853. FULL HAND COLOR. ENGRAVING. 5 small inset maps. At each corner vignettes, clockwise from top right corner, Detroit, Cincinnati, St. Louis, and Chicago. Border outside neat lines: very decorative leafy vines with hanging bunches of grapes. Printed in black with original hand coloring of counties in red, blue, green and yellow and area between outer neat lines in pink. Published separately as a pocket map. Original dark reddish brown leather stamped in gilt on front and in blind on rear covers with images of a train and steamboat and printed in a decorated rectangular border "Ensign & Thayer's Map of the Western States". Attached to inside front cover is a 36 page guide with endpapers. Very short tears repaired at many fold intersections with very minor loss at one or two, several faint spots, a few extra soft creases; otherwise, a fine copy with excellent color. Slight signs of wear to head and tail of spine and tips of covers, rear cover with small areas of wear, 36 page guide faintly foxed in places; otherwise, excellent condition with very bright gilt front cover.
