north to the Canadian border. Dissected and laid down on linen.
Fitted carefully into a nicely stitched home made canvas pouch
with string tie, neatly lettered in ink with the name James
Holter. Obviously used by an early surveyor, park ranger or
guide,- someone who worked in the park extensively. Before
completion of the Going-to-the-Sun Road in 1933, tours were made
on horses and could take up to two weeks or more. A durable map
was essential. An interesting relic of the early days of the
national parks before commercial park maps were readily
