Unusual Scottish book illustration map that shows Oregon bordering on Canada at 54 degrees 40 minutes North; a bone of contention between the U.S. and Great Britain at the time. First state with the northern boundary extending to 54 Degrees, 40 Minutes. The Manifest Destiny boundary claimed since 1824 nearly provoked a war with England that was successfully arbitrated by the Treaty of 1846. COPPER ENGRAVING. Scarce interim Burroughs copyright, that came between H.S. Tanner and S. Aug. Mitchell. Texas in it largest configuration. Huge Indian Territory, Iowa extends to the Canadian border, Indian Territory includes Kansas and Colorado. Upper or New California includes most of the Southwest; New Mexico is a vertical narrow strip west of the Pecos (called Puerco) River. The gold region of northern California is shown in yellow. Lower left corner with two insets: "Map of the Maritime and Overland routes to California" and "Map of the Gold and Quicksilver district of California". Gives and names major trails and explorer's routes. Leather cover lacking, professionally restored and laid down on linen, old fold stains. Original coloring. Published separately as a pocket map with text. Text: Description of Oregon and California, embracing an Account of the Gold Regions; to which is added, an Appendix, containing Descriptions of various kinds of Gold, and Methods of Testing its Genuineness. Original embossed black morocco stamped in gilt on front cover in pictorial cartouche with steamboats and railroad train "Mitchell's Guide to California". Marbled endpapers. Map: backed with light silk repairing tears to fold intersections, copyright line slightly shaved; otherwise, excellent with fine bright color. Covers: Expertly rebacked with modern morocco, minor rubbing and wear to tips; otherwise, very good with bright gilt. Slight darkening to contents. Overall, near fine. Mitchell's famous guide to Oregon and California, with a very important map of the West. This is the second issue, with the same imprint, date and collation as the first, but with cover title "Mitchell's Guide to California" rather than "Texas Oregon and California" and the inclusion of the two inset maps. Thus, this issue represents the first appearance of the "Map of the Gold and Quicksilver District of California" and the first Mitchell map of California showing the Gold District colored separately on the main map.
