Upper or New California includes most of the Southwest; New
Mexico is a vertical narrow strip west of the Pecos (called
Puerco) River. The gold region of northern California is shown
in yellow. Lower left corner with two insets: "Map of the
Maritime and Overland routes to California" and "Map of the Gold
and Quicksilver district of California". Gives and names major
trails and explorer's routes. Leather cover lacking,

near fine. Mitchell's famous guide to Oregon and California,
with a very important map of the West. This is the second issue,
with the same imprint, date and collation as the first, but with
cover title "Mitchell's Guide to California" rather than "Texas
Oregon and California" and the inclusion of the two inset maps.
Thus, this issue represents the first appearance of the "Map of
the Gold and Quicksilver District of California" and the first
Mitchell map of California showing the Gold District colored
separately on the main map. An important and rare California
item. In 23 years of the Antique Map Price Records, eleven 1846
editions of this map have appeared versus one example of this
