A
FUNDAMENTAL TEXAS MAP. POPULAR ISSUE AVAILABLE TO EARLY TEXAS
SETTLERS
MELISH,
JOHN/SAML. HARRISON. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
compiled from the latest & best authorities by John Melish 1820.
JOHN MELISH. PHILADELPHIA. c1818. JULY 10th, improved to 1822. COPPER
ENGRAVING.
Attractive national map with small flying eagle vignette above
title clutching shield and olive branch in its talons. This is the
small Melish national map, not to be confused with the large wall
map he published about this time that shows the entire continent.
Melish apparently took his 1820 map and improved it to 1822. While
Wheat (Transmississippi west, 338) mentions the earlier, he did
not mention this issue. This is one of the earliest of the small
Melish U.S. maps that defines the new Texas boundaries accepted by
the United States in the treaty signed 22 Feb. 1819. It was
proclaimed 22 Feb. 1821. It is also one of the first maps defining
Texas under the Spanish-U.S. boundary agreement and available to
Austin's earliest authorized settlers from the United States. The
Texas coast from Brownsville to Fort Matagorda lie within the
Intendancy of San Louis Potosi. The entire map locates Indian
tribes, forts, military bounty lands, and territorial status. Most
of the west is included within the Missouri
Territory. Important for showing a few Lewis & Clark report sites;
his entire route is traced on the 6-sheet wall map which underwent
continual revision so that there are over twenty known states.
Ristow pp.168-9. Encapsulated. Some browning. 16"H. x 19.5"W.
GOOD.
$1,500.00. I.D.#23879.

MELISH,
JOHN/BENJAMIN TANNER.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
M. CAREY & SON. PHILADELPHIA. c1820-1. FULLY HAND COLORED.
COPPER ENGRAVING. Engraved by
Benjamin Tanner incorporating findings from Lewis & Clark and Pike
with a few mistakes corrected from the surveys of Major Long. With
the note about these lower center. Extends west to Rocky Mountains
only and shows Texas as a Mexican province with borders at its
largest extent. Further Texas interest are the overlapping
provinces of Coahuila, New Grenada (with "San Luis Potosi") marked
across it) and a sliver of New Mexico. Texas place names include
Mesa, Loredo, San Saba, San Antonio, Pres del Alter, Ft.
Matagorda, Nacagdoches, Panee Village, Cardo Vil(lage), Haytones
(with little triangles at the head of the Rio Brazos), and
Galvezton (sic) well inland on the Rio de Nieves or Neches. Apache
Indians shown in Big Bend country. Arkansas Territory encompasses
most of what is now Oklahoma. Has Osage, Cherokee and Delaware
Villages. Immense
Missouri Territory also
designating many Indian tribes and villages (Osage, Mandan,
Blackfoot, Pawnee, Mahan, Kanses), forts ( Calhoun, Clarke,
Mandan), and excellent depiction of topography (highest peak,
Great Bend, Falls, with note "Clark's canoes stop 3,000 miles from the
Mississippi").
Missouri has its present boundaries except the boot heel is not yet
clearly defined. Subdued pastel coloring. Wheat 338. Contemporary
with the classic Melish wall map that shows the entire continent,
a paragon now bringing $125,000. Slight margin stains. 16.75"H. x
21.5"W. GOOD.
I.D.#23747. SOLD.
