Richmond, Va. WAR DEPT.: OFFICE EXPLORATIONS & SURVEYS.
RICHMOND, VA. 1858, JAN. LITHOGRAPHY. Wheat 943. Unmentioned in
Wagner-Camp. This synthesis is from surveys of several
illustrious officers. Part of a suite of exploration maps Wheat
says were published to aide army officers during the "Mormon
War" to select the best roads west. Philips mentions and Wheat
illustrates a Map of Utah Territory of the same year by these
lithographers, much larger size. Why a lithographer in Richmond
rather than Washington, D.C. was used has not yet been
explained. Inscribed in lower right corner, and not mentioned by
Wheat in his bibliographical description, "A.A. Humphreys Capt.
Topl. Engrs. In charge." Andrew Atkinson Humphreys was an
authority on the flow and management of great rivers, served as
chief of staff for Gen. Meade at Gettysburg and retired as Chief
of Engineers in 1879. Fremont and Stansbury are listed in DAB.
Wheat felt it "a most impressive map," and "an excellent
production, and serves to give the discoveries of the named
explorers in detail." Shows the main wagon routes west from a
major fort and jumping off place. Extensive topographical
detail. Browned with margins a bit wormed. Very scarce. 19.5"H.
