Plate engraved first by Jodocus Hondius after the map by Capt. John Smith. Blaeu purchased the plate in 1629 and altered the imprint to reflect the new ownership. Inset of Powhatan's council with John Smith as honored captive. Royal coat of arms with attired Indian holding broadaxe and bow. Latin text on reverse. Another even larger edition of I.D.#03082. In the center is a large circular topographic and political map, (which includes a portion of North Carolina) centering on Richmond surrounded by nine smaller circular inset maps. These are of Vicksburg, Memphis/Nashville/West Tenn., Knoxville/E. Tenn., Chattanooga, Charleston, fortifications around Richmond, Milledgeville, Ga., Montgomery, Al., and Galveston, Tx. Each show various distances from their central point. Maps printed in blue with letterpress in red. Handsome period graphics. Eleventh edition. 1/3000. This copy has never been folded nor inserted into the printed envelope "Magnus' Half Dollar Portfolio" as was the 10th edition shown fully illustrated on page 277 of Richard W. Stephenson "Civil War maps... in the Library of Congress." L.C. has editions 9, 10 and 12 but not this one which omits an inset of Natchez. Below title and scale of miles is a compass arrow. The GU copy has a reversed N and S at either end; the present copy has only the arrow without directional letters.
