ENGLISH VERSION OF
DECORATIVE BLEAU WORLD MAP
PIETER
VAN DEN KEERE (AFTER W. BLEAU & J. JANSSON). NOVA TOTIUS
TERRARUM
ORBIS GEOGRAPHCA AC HYDROGRAPHICA TABULA. MOSES PITT. OXFORD. 1680 (THE
ENGLISH ATLAS). OUTLINE HAND COLOR (ORIGINAL). COPPER ENGRAVING. Splendid example of one of the most
lavishly decorative world map from the "Golden Age" of cartography. Some of the
finest cartographers and engravers of all time had a hand in this paragon of
maps: Willem Bleau, Jan Jansson, Pieter Van Den Keere. This is the very scarce
English version by Moses Pitt of Oxford. The surround of 22 vignettes
represents an epitome of ancient European iconography: The Four Seasons and the
Four Elements (Earth, Air, Fire & Water) literally embodied, as well as seven
Romans gods, representing the sun,
moon
Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The Mercator projection map depicts
California as an island with no Pacific coastline above Cape Mendocino.
Strangely,
this
alters the more geographically correct 1608 plate. Other geography is updated
(1608 to 1680) to reflect the discovery of Australia (Nova Hollandia). Tierra
del Fuego. Sea monsters had become endangered during the 17th C. only a token
one larger than the Falklands still guards the South Atlantic sea lanes. A ship
with all sails billowing keeps it's distance mid-Pacific. Minor centerfold
wrinkles, easily cured. Else an extremely good example. Shirley. Mapping World
